Western Canada definitely has its own aesthetic. The mountains, the trees, the water, the air – the majestic presence of nature pervades their design sensibilities, and I’d wager this strong sense of place is what has the look in demand far beyond the Rockies.

Today’s Home Tour is a great example: in this city home remodel, a little BC style lends itself to make over a 1920s Seattle Mediterranean. Perched atop Queen Anne Hill, overlooking the city, bay and mountains, the interior of the painted brick home was allegedly a neogothic scare, with a single window oriented toward the view.
Owner Jim Dow (who happens to be a successful contractor) gutted the home to a shell, and enlisted Vancouver-based (now with satellite offices in Seattle, Los Angeles and New York) interior designer Garret Cord Werner to collaborate on the remodel and decorating. Garret, whose naturally inspired modernism with occasional zen elements is piquing interests all over North America as well as Dubai, read the project perfectly, and aided the owner/contractor in creating a city retreat with signature western tranquility.
