Question of the Week: Are you all About Clean Lines, or Cozy Clutter?

My mind abhors a vacuum. As a teen my walls were covered in magazine cutouts, framed postcards, crude artistic attempts, and other various paraphernalia of youth. Every time my room was rearranged or a piece of furniture moved, and my delicate web of wall filler disturbed, I promptly added more to keep out the white.

As time went on I moved onto small furniture, and eventually everything else in sight. My nightstand was decoupaged with tears from Archie comics (my fave), the sides of my bookcase hung with hooks full of necklaces, the strings of my Roman blinds stacked with beads.  All this to say, I couldn’t keep a line clean if Mies Van der Rohe’s life depended on it, and so I live ensconced in cozy clutter.  It makes me happy.

But on the other hand, I find modern interiors intensely beautiful. A friend of mine recently completed the dream reno and went for the minimal look. Every time I walk into her home I sigh an involuntary sigh of relief. Clean floors and marble surfaces abound, and sleek built-ins hide everything. As unlikely as it may be, I still like to entertain the thought that if I built it, it will come – a shift in sensibility toward clean lines, that is. But I don’t know…

It's funny, I notice that every time I post a Home Tour of a modern house (and most designer new-builds tend to be of the modern, minimalist persuasion) you, our dear readers, are somewhat lukewarm about it. While many of you courteously leave encouraging comments, inevitably one or two will come right out and call it "cold," "sterile," "institutional," and so on. But who am I to judge, to each their own, right?

So which is it for you -- clean lines or cozy clutter?  Take a Poll and leave your comments below!

Question of the Week is featured every Monday on Stylesheet.

Well I would have to say that many of us out there have things that we like to have around us.  Something that has a special connection and it may not fit the clean line decore that so many people want.  But the items that don't match anthing should still be around you if they make you feel good.  That said I guess I am a clutter nutter.  I did though when selling my last two homes try to remove all the things I love around me to make those clean lines everyone look for.  Not everyone will like your clutter and one needs to realize that their clutter that they love not everyone will love and a home that needs to sell should be clean lines.

CLUTTER?   I feel much depends upon one's interpretation of the word. To me,  if  you can't see the walls or the floor, then to me it is CLUTTER, but on the other hand I strongly feel 'less is more'.   (Yes, I voted undecided....smiles.)    -Brenda-

No clutter. That is not to say I don't like a personal, eclectic look. But I like a tidy front door, cleared off dining room table, bed made, etc. I do appreciate it when someone creates a focal point - i.e. a collection of their children's art or a treasured collection but I don't really like the look of knick knacks evenly distributed all over the house!

Organized clutter? Streamlined cozy clutter?  I don't mind collections and "stuff" but there has to be a place for everything.  Prefer baskets hold and hide stuff.  Drawers and cabinets for kitchen stuff.  An office for mail and school work stuff, etc.  Tidy country cottage that doesn't feel like a cold corporate atrium.

I have to have a certain amount of "clutter", if you will, around me.  Guess I fell in love with clutter while watching old movies (1940's types) that featured large estates with libraries/studies that had exotic clutter around.  I enjoy the layered look - on walls, tables, floors. In the past year or so, I will admit that I have pared down my "stuff" somewhat but I just can't do without some things lingering around to catch my interest.  LOVE books everywhere.  On shelves, on tabletops, stacked on the floor next to a comfy chair, inside a basket placed under a table or chair, where ever !!!  I am definitely not a minimalist.  I enjoy my blue & white plate collection on the wall in my breakfast room, 2-3 plates of graduated sizes, shapes, styles stacked together in a wooden plate stand on counters & tabletops - oh, and on a stack of books.  Love Mary Carol Garrity's decorating style.  Her books are great!!  "Nell Hill's Style at Home", "Nell Hill's Decorating Secrets", Nell Hill's Feather Your Nest", Nell Hill's Entertaining in Style", "Nell Hill's Christmas at Home", & "Nell Hill's Stylish Weddings".
