Shoestring Makeover: SERIOUSLY On-The-Cheap Guest Room

Elana's guest room.

I'm a little nervous putting up my guest room for all of you today. It's REALLY shoestring. I mean, everything in it I either found on the street, tossed a few coins for at a garage sale or bought it at Value Village. So please take that into consideration when judging. On the other hand, what the hey - I'd love to know what you think and hear your suggestions, so on second thought, let'er rip!

Guest room at the time of purchasing the home. Don't let my husband's good camera and the sunlight fool you - it was AWFUL.

I've posted several spaces from my shabby (minus the chic) house before, so you may know by now that we bought beyond renovation means, and have had to get pretty creative with making it so that we don't rush out to spend time in public places at first sight of the weekend. Today's post, my guest room, is no exception.  In fact, it stood cluttered with boxes and just a bedframe for almost two years (shame!) before a girlfriend visiting from out of town forced me pay it some mind. The photo above is of the same room as it appeared when we bought the house, before the original owners vacated (I wanted to you see the full transformation for some extra credit).

So here's what I did - and again, I stress that EVERYTHING in here started out as rubbish, save for the vintage bedframe (read notes in the photo gallery):

Absolutely LOVE IT. You have inspired me. We are expecting a visitor from France who will be staying with us for three months. I have to re-do the guest bedroom for her and this is the inspiration I needed! Thanks!

Oh PKitty!  You made my day!

Wow...good job for your shoestring! My only suggestions are to hang the art on the wall (not the stuff on the side of the radiator or the ones leaning on your shoe cupboard...those work well as is) but the painting on TOP of the radiator and on the dresser. Also I would hang that awesome embroidery thing over top of the headboard of the bed. It's too beautiful to be lying where makeup and coffee mugs could stain it. I'm also a big believer in only hanging lightweight stuff over places where people sleep! Add a few more pillows and move the throw to the foot of the bed to beef up the layers and clean up that useful table that it's currently on top of. Good for you for painting the pine. My husband thinks even the most hideous paneling is sacrosanct. sigh...

Well, that's my 2 cents...ignore it all if you think I'm nuts!

makes me wonder why in the heck my mother in law is paying someone $3000 to make over my daughters bedroom.

What a lovely airy room!  VV is a great friend...you sure found some great stuff!  I would agree with Cavingirl that the photo on the rad should be hung. By sitting or hanging things off of it, the rad sticks out like a sore thumb which is contrary to what you hoped for.  And since you asked, I am not a fan of the pink table, I think if you painted it white, it would tie in nicely with the cute peice at the foot of the bed. To add colour I would recommend more of the light blue/green you are using by way of a rug, some pillow shams, a sheer swag on the window and/or cushions for your other chairs.  A couple of these items would give the room the added dimension I think you were looking for.  What a great makeover!

It's great!  A pile of pillows would add a bit to the inviting space.  And as other bloggers mentioned, some colour with a thow at the foot of the bed and similar coloured "shams" or something.  I also agree that the picture on the radiator should be hung up.

You've done a great job.  A vase of fresh flowers when company's coming and you're good to go!

I love the look of your room, very romantic. I too would paint the pink table under the window white to match the one at the foot of the bed.  that beautiful embroidered piece could be framed to protect it and hung over the  bed as a focal point to the room and some of the soft colours, ie blues etc. could be picked up in a toss cushion or two on the bed.  keep it simple.  If you realy want to keep it on the dresser, you could cover it with glass to protect it, make the glass cover the whole dresser top.  re the shell lamp, neat, but you should get it rewired as it is a fire hazzard at the moment with the old wiring, shocks etc.  not an expensive thing to do.  group your art together so as not to look too piecie, and a great braided rug in pastels on the floor by the bed would be fenominal or a sisal look.  the sisal look can be a berber type broadloom area rug with the edges bound.  lots available at discount and flooring stores.  the braided rug could be a value vill./goodwill/yard sale item. for the window a soft swag with tails over a light rod would finish it off as with the bed overlaping the frame and the radiator, long panels are not suitable.  to anchor the bed to the floor and hide any under-bed storage, a nice cotton ruffled bed skirt would look great (Ikea has a nice one and not expensive).  enjoy your company.

Great job! My concern is also with the fabric on the dresser. Would it break the bank to have it put onto a canvas stretcher, or hanging as a tapestry?  It would be lovely over the bed or on a wall all its own........

( I covet that bedstead!)

Love your room.  You never know what treasures you will find looking in second hand stores or garage sales to decorate your home.

I love the comfy coziness of this room but I would add more pillows, as stated in other comments. In regards to your window covering question. I am a fan of less is more and in this case, I would not do anything more at this point. The linear pieces of furntiure like your bedstead and tables, even the chairs denote an airy open approach and the lines of the window frame compliments that wonderfully. It's hard to see but if your woodwork has interest, show it off! If it doesn't then I would consider beefing it up but still, I'd leave the window as is. Great job on the room, I'd stay there myself!

I would love to have the Value Village that you shop at.  Love the room, without the rug

Liz, the secret is, you gotta go all the time, and buy stuff if you love it, even if you don't need it.  You will always be happy you did.  Most of this stuff I accumulated over several years, and it stood in other places.  I kinda threw it all together and bought a few things here and there right before my friend came.  I wish I could just walk in and find it all there too, but sadly, to find good things cheap takes work.

Love the room!  Who needs a designer and pay so much money.  With some thought, and creativity it's easy to pull a room together.  Has anyone heard about a really neat small business in Montreal?  It's called Creations and Stuff by Me.  The owner recycles used furniture and does an amazing job.  Dorothy has done quite a few pieces for me and it's amazing.  She calls it reclaimed chic!  Just thought I would mention it cause it seems there are only Toronto based businesses here.  Sorry guys!  I love Toronto, but would love to see more stuff from Montreal too.  If you need a guest blogger from Montreal, would love to do it.  A bientot!
