Bargain Saturday: CD Storage Turned Makeup Organizer

Fira 9-drawer mini-chest, $18.99. Image from Ikea.

My name is Alicia and I have a problem: Too many cosmetics! Years of working in lifestyle media (read: covering fashion, beauty, decor, entertainment, etc.) means I've amassed quite the collection of lip glosses, liners, mascaras and more. I don't use the fancy stuff daily, but it's nice to have on hand for special occasions. But where to store it all?

While recently wandering through Ikea, I spotted the Fira series of chests, which are unpainted, wooden mini-cabinets with drawers for CDs and papers. The 9-drawer version instantly spoke to my need for lots of separate storage spaces that will still fit on top of my toilet tank. I plan to spray paint it and label the drawers accordingly: Lip Gloss, Mascara, etc. so I know where everything goes and it stays organized (not my strong suit). It would also work well for storing buttons and little things for crafts, or even in the garage for screws, drill bits, etc.

How do you deal with bathroom storage? Any ideas to share?

I have one of these that I use to store jewellery in.

For bobby pins, hair ties, etc, I use magnetized spice tins that I picked up from Cost Plus. I stick them to the inside of my medicine cabinet.

Yes - I have this! It is very handy. Right now mine is painted in numerous gaudy colours as I used it for storing children's craft supplies. I am going to repaint it to go with my craft area makeover and turn the drawers around and put cute little knobs on them.

This would also work great in the laundry room to hold all those spare buttons, spools of thread, needles, zippers etc. I have something similar and it's great to have everything always in one place.

What a fab idea. I have been trying to find a nice way to store my bathroom knick knacks without it looking like a typical bathroom storage. Any excuse to make a trip to Ikea is the added plus :o)
