Question of the Week: Is Flying a Canadian Flag on your House too American?

How many times have we heard someone say, “Wow, they’re SO patriotic over there – flags everywhere!” in reference to our ardent neighbours to the south?  However, over the decades I’ve seen the Canadian flag gain ground amidst our own, less demonstrative neighbourhoods, pointing to a possible rise in *GASP* patriotism.

I (being a national and not a native of Canada), am not sure how I feel about flying the red leaf off my house. I do feel it’s a little like religious decals on your car or lofty inspirational slogans tattooed on the body – all are statements about myself I’m a little weary to offer up for public viewing.

Canada Day is fast approaching however, and certainly if not year-round, I’m considering revealing my fondness for this land by flying some red and white.  If I do decide to go for it, I can bet my citizenship card on the fact that my native-born neighbours will heckle me for it. All in good fun of course, but they – as I – will immediately recognize that it’s somewhat out of character.

I know I’m not alone in my discomfort with showing a bit of patriotism – is it plain tacky or just too American? Or, are we Canadians – despite the Canadian flag patches on our knapsacks – simply not like that?

Question of the Week is featured Mondays on Stylesheet.

Forget the Americans! Fly a flag wherever you choose, whenever you choose! I fly one on my senior scooter, & have had young men salute it,  or give thumbs up (makes me feel good too).....our Canadian military could do with a bit of psychological support from us all. Who gives a rap what anyone else thinks? That's their problem!

We have a flag flying from our home.  We also  have another one flying on a flag pole.  I'm with you Anne !

Why should patriotism be reserved for just the Americans.Canadians should be proud of our country as it's one of the best places to live.

As for you flying the flag, why not?Don't you feel honoured to live here?I know I do.

Why do you have to fly a flag to feel/be patriotic and really to be a Canadian is a lot more complicated then just flying a  flag.  It would be far better to be responsible and honest citizens who try to make Canada the best country in the world. I have a neighbor who installed a  9 m flag pole at  their back fence. The flag is poorly made, faded, and has strangely proportioned bars and maple leaf.  We've been neighbors for over a decade and it went up a few summers ago- they didn't ask (I think they felt it was their property and choice).  But their choice has had an effect because the flag is so big and fake. I have tried through landscaping to block it out but the other yards are so open it's not completely possible.  I think it's great on government properties and schools and flying a flag on just Canada Day would be fine too. Actually I would love to just see nothing but a big Canadian maple tree instead - now that's Canadian.

I reside on the top floor of my apt. building, I have a Canadian flag in the center window of each room.

I am soooo proud to fly our very own flag, you see, I remember when Canada got it's flag.

Thanks to Mr. Pearson

How phony to fly the flag on one day only.. why bother? I find it strange that an adult would be intimidated by other adults around her. Grow up and do what YOU want. You don't need permission or approval from your neighbours.

I very proudly fly the Canadian Flag at my home, every day.

It reminds me of how lucky I am to be living in this land - it reminds me of our your people risking death in other lands so that others may have a fraction of what we have here.  It reminds me to be grateful to our military, past and present.

Others in my area fly the Canadian Flag AND their own flag, and I respect their loyalty and patriotism.

Flying a flag would only be too American if it were an American flag.  Canadians are always proud to be Canadians whether they fly a flag or not.  And so we should be.

June 30, 2009 2:01 PM

I do not fly a flag and I do not know why.  I am proud to  be a Canadian (I am one by choice, not birth) but I think that Canadian patriotism runs a little differently than in the states.  We do not have to shout it out.  We all know it is there without the bloody dinosaur foot print in the snow.

To Anne and Don, have any Americans actually told you that flying the flag is only for the US?  I am a proud American and I visit Canada at least three times a year and love it.  However, I think these "border wars" need to stop.  We are neighbors, not enemies.

Myself I do not fly one, however on Canada Day I definitely do and when I travel I ensure as a Foreigner I let my Canadian Identity be known.

I cannot speak for other  5th-generation Canadians, but by 'YOU' doing so I would consider it a compliment.

Many who have been adopted by this wonderful country  "A Land of Freedoms and Choice" fly their homeland flag and an eyebrow is seldom raised.  So follow your heart Anne!

I love Canada and I love the Americans.  I respect our flag even though I preferred the old Ensign we had before, just personal preference.  I didn't think it was the job of the liberals to force a flag on us that we had no say in.

June 30, 2009 2:37 PM

I am so sick of EVERYTHING being compared to Americans.

If you are patriotic....from whatever country you are from......then fly your flag. Fill your boots.

Every Canadian should have a flag on their home EVERY DAY!!

I LOVE Canada and I am happy that I am Canadian.

GOOOO CANADA!!!

All Canadien persons should be proud of your country, it's strong, has a lot of future, it's different, and wonderful, many people wish they had a country like Canada, be PROUD, SAY IT, SCREAM IT AND LOVE IT

June 30, 2009 5:32 PM

Yup.

June 30, 2009 8:32 PM

At the moment we have 3 flags taped to windows in our house, and if I can find my large flag it will go outside in time for  Canada Day. It was carefully packed away during bad weather. It is about time that we start showing our pride in Canada. There is no better country that I would like to live in.

June 30, 2009 8:56 PM

How many times have we been told how "apathetic" Canadians are- about our politics, and about everything in regards to our country? A bit of patriotism never hurt anyone! Fly the flag! Tattoo it on your arm!

June 30, 2009 11:09 PM

Canadians are Canadians living in the number one country of the world. Americans can do what they like. We should all be very proud to live in this amazing country. I was born here and am sooooo proud to be a Canadian. This is my country!

July 1, 2009 12:05 AM

Heck no! Whatever country you live in, and you're proud of it, go ahead and hang up a flag on your doorstep. I know I definitely will one day.

I love Canada, I was born here, and I plan on traveling around, and spending my life here. It's heaven on Earth, and I'm more than proud to be a part of this wonderful country.

On that note, Happy Canada Day to everyone, to all the countries in the world.

They say God Bless America, and I say God Bless Canada, and everywhere else.

I can't believe flying a CANADIAN flag could ever be too American. There's nothing wrong with taking pride in our country.  I have a Canadian flag pin that I wear on my coat and one on my tote bag. I'm wearing the pin on my scrubs tonight at work (Canada Day).

We fly our Canadian flag at our cottage all summer long (we jokingly say that like Buckingham palace the flag is raised when we're in residence).

If you love where you live no mater what country you live feel free to fly the flag.  Being proud of where you live is great.  I fly a flag and when I vist with friends in the US they have a flag.  It simply tells people you are proud of where you live.  And to Margaret I am sorry that you feel your neighbour flag does not fit the Norm but it is thier place and they may have a speacial connection with that flag and if it is what makes them proud of where they live then I say fly if proudly.

July 2, 2009 10:32 AM

Cudos to Jean.....ty for her statement.

I fly both Canadian & American Flags. I am Canadian born, but have family that are American born. I am proud of and respect both countries.

July 2, 2009 3:38 PM

I'm a Canadian living in the US and have dual citizenship.  I take great pride in being able to fly both flags at this time of year.  My neighbours have never objected.

July 3, 2009 8:32 AM

what a stupid question. !!! only a Canadian would ask it!!

July 3, 2009 9:28 AM

I see nothing wrong with it. Heck its not my business to even care what you or others do, as long as it is not illegal. Fly that flag. Just remember the do's and don't of the Canada Flag. Don't want to be disrespectful.

July 3, 2009 9:44 AM

I too feel very proud to be a Canadian and to live in such a wonderful country where there is freedom and peace.  I show my great appreciation for Canada by flying her flag high.

July 3, 2009 10:35 AM

The Quebcois are patriotic and love flying their provincial flag. And little by little I am seeing more Canadian flags displayed proudly beside their provincial flag. Patriotism in whatever form is not reserved for the Americans! Come on all you Canadians that love the beauty of your country - wave your flag!!!

July 3, 2009 8:10 PM

I really don't mind flying an American Flag, I have relatives in the US and I have been flying the Canadian Flag up to 2007.  I moved and am living in an apartment.  No place for a flag to hang from.  Flying your own Flag is just being patriotic.

July 5, 2009 12:39 PM

OK here is the thing, when we had the Union Jack everyone had one and everyone was proud of it. Then in 1965  we got the new and improved Canadian flag, it is a very nice flag simple and easy to remember but I think it took a while for people to get use to it I remember as a kid my Grandmother still flew the Union Jack not the Maple leaf.  I believe everyone out side of the Greater Toronto Area is very proud of being Canadian for generations in most cases. The GTO is not a very good representation of Canadians if you want to find real Canadians you are going to have to further north then southern Ontario.

July 6, 2009 10:54 AM

Fly them both. You can also get combo flags with both together. I'm from Canada living in the U.S. with duel citizenship. I'm proud to be an American but I would never forget my heritage.

July 21, 2009 2:17 AM

Go ahead and fly that flag.  Many years ago, more people did fly the Canadian flag--when it was the ensign.  That was because the major makeup of the population was British.  I think the red leaf on the white background looks very nice when it is clean--don't let it get all dirty and tattered.
