Question of the Week: Do You Shop at a Mall Because of Its Decor?

A few weeks ago I was in Edmonton visiting my mother and one of my family's favourite past times is to go shopping at the many malls throughout the city.

Mall culture played a substantial part in my life growing up in Edmonton as malls were always epicentres of social activity and they provided for the perfect escape from the harsh Alberta elements (winters were too cold to casually go outside from store to store and air conditioned malls were always a delightful retreat from the summer heat). In the '80s, the popularity of mall culture in Edmonton peaked with the construction of the biggest mall in North America, West Edmonton Mall. This mega mall spans over 3.6 million square feet and boasts more than 800 stores, over 100 eating establishments, an amusement park, skating rink, water park and many more attractions. Anything and everything can be found in this huge shopping and entertainment complex so needless to say, with everything under one roof why would you want to go shopping at any other mall?

In order to compete with West Edmondon Mall's popularity, many malls in the Edmonton area have undergone many interior renovations over the years in hopes to attract shoppers and businesses. I definitely noticed a difference in all of the malls that I visited while I was there. Fine leather furniture in designated socializing areas, televisions, modern decor, and a contemporary design sensibility have inconspicuously become the norm in all Edmonton malls.

My favourite mall decor discovery was a huge contemporary fireplace (see above) in the centre of the food court in the Edmonton City Centre shopping mall. It was completely fabulous, but at the same time totally unnecessary. Personally, my decision as to which mall I shop at is based upon the stores found in that specific mall and less upon the mall's decor, but I will admit I did feel a little fabulous having a cup of coffee beside that marvelous fireplace!

Do you shop at a specific mall because of its decor? How much does the decor in a mall affect your decision to go shopping?

I've always been more interested in value for $, & love a jolly good sale. Who wants to pay extra just because of the decor?

It's always nicer to shop in a well maintained mall and it probably makes one spend more there.

In general, I hate malls.  I would rather shop downtown in indivdual stores.  Having said that, when I do go to the mall, I do enjoy a clean modern looking mall to some ugly, outdated location.

I find that the decor of a mall contributes to the type of people that shop there. Better decorated and maintained malls tend to have better security and feel safer.

Answer of the week: no. But if it's a dump I won't shop there!

I go to a mall for the shops I want to spend my money in.  I've shopped in the most ghetto malls, but that doesn't keep me away if there's a good deal to be had.  I have to admit though, I love the long leather benches and the giant glass skylight at Yorkdale Mall.

NO, but it MUST be C-L-E-A-N!

Personally, I go to different malls for different experiences. I spent a ton of time during my mat leave at Sherway Mall with my newborn because it was so clean and calm, plus it provided beautiful nursing rooms and family washrooms. But, despite the crowds and the often-picked over stores and merch, I still love The Eaton Center in downtown Toronto for it's urban buzz and busy vibe.

Call me a snob, but I won't shop at a mall that is run down or still has that 80s look. My favorite shopping malls are Yorkdale and Sherway Gardens because even when they are packed full of people the vast open space layout still gives you room to move and not feel claustrophobic.

I usually shop at malls because I need to pick something up and not because of the decor. However, I do admit that it makes a difference for the overall shopping experience to go into a mall with an attractive, bright & inviting interior. You definitely notice the difference when the establishment has the invested money to make things attractive for the patrons. In Southgate Mall here in Edmonton, they placed upside down charcoal bbqs on the ceiling in the food court and I thought that was a cool idea. So if I was standing upside down on the ceiling, the charcoal bbq is waist high and it makes an interesting 3-dimensional pattern with all the bbq's up there. Another thing they did at Southgate is write a line of poetry on the circular ceiling pattern at four central sitting areas at the mall quoting from the same poet as he describes the four seasons. That was a nice added touch for those sitting to contemplate about the beauty that surrounds us as they wait for their family or friends to finish shopping. Overall, the decor does not inspire me to shop more but rather it invites me to shop more because of the appealing environment. When visitors come to town, there are some malls that I would consider taking them to more so than others because, after all, most of the shops they offer are generally the same but it's the uniqueness and ambience that draws me in there.

A mall does not need to be trendy or posh, but it MUST be clean and well maintained.
