Question of the Week: Is Designer Pet Furniture Over the Top?

I was recently over at a friend's place and she is an animal lover who owns a couple of cats and a dog. As we made our way into her living room, I learned that she had just purchased some new furniture for her furry friends so that her own furniture would not get damaged by her pets.

The cats had their own furniture in one corner which was comprised of a perch complete with a scratching post and a house. However, it was the furniture for her dog that had me completely speechless. Positioned beside her sofa was a miniature chenille upholstered chaise lounge. I've seen cushioned baskets, mats, large pillows, and even towels used as designated pet lounging and sleeping areas in a home, but this was the first time that I had ever encountered designer pet furniture. It was definitely extravagant for her pooch and I know that she loves her dog dearly, but I felt that the doggy chaise lounge was a bit much.

Perhaps I'm missing something because I don't own any pets, but is it just me or is designer pet furniture over the top? Take our poll and leave your comments below!

I can see some might be useful for raising an animal above a drafty floor,  otherwise they are catering to the owner, not the pet. Cats are notorious for choosing their own sleeping spots, & for that reason you could waste a lot of $$.

Over the top but I have to admit that if I had a dog...AND the money, it would be great to have something like the Contour Modern Dog Bed so you're not relying on a dirty old pillow or towel to keep pet hair off your furniture. It's so sleek!

It really depends on your animal. My cat will sleep on anything I put out for him, if it's in a certain location.

I agree with Anne that designer pet furniture is more for the owner than for the pet. As long as the pet bed is comfy your pet won't know any different...

Even though over the top, I think that this person just wants everything to look good so if makes them happy, well, so be it!

Gosh, my first impression of the photo of the dog lounging on the "orange bed" was that it was a treadmill!!!  How's that for walkin' the dog!

If you can find something that fits in with your decor and makes your pet happy - go for it!

I do love the way you think and style and no one can get me away from the TV when you guys are on.

Over to the question. Yes, why not designer pet furniture if the pet will lay in it?

. I do have to cats who seems to love mudbath and my white sofas. They should be thankful that I love them ;o)

Why not? If you are going to have a "special" place for your pet to sleep and you can afford to splurge, then why not have a piece of furniture that matches your decor, after all, isn't that what decorating is all about, making sure all the pieces fit together well? The cat/dog doesn't care whether it's an old comforter they get to sleep on or a fancy velvet couch, but wouldn't you rather have the latter in your family room?

When pet furniture is actually miniature furniture for pets YES! It is over the top but when it functions as furniture for your home, it is not only not over the top but essential for home owners with pets. A perfect example is DenHaus; dub dub dub  dot denhaus dot com

People spend thousands upon thousands of dollars decorating their homes.  What's the difference if they spend a few hundred dollars more to complete the look?  They're not asking us to pay for their 'pet peeves'.  I say, finish your homes the way you want, as everyone giving their opinion here doesn't live in it, just you.  Enjoy!
