Question of the Week: Are Patio Lanterns Whimsical Decorations or an '80s Decorating Disaster?

Growing up in the '80s, I remember attending many backyard parties where the yards would be beautifully landscaped and illuminated by colourful patio lanterns. These lanterns would be connected on an electrical cord and spanned the length of the yard in order to create the ultimate patio party experience. Different lantern shapes and sizes allowed the decorator to create a visual spectacle of colors to be enjoyed by all throughout the night. Patio lanterns were so popular at the time that they were immortalized in a Canadian summer anthem by musical artist Kim Mitchell (see video below for a glimpse of patio lantern glory!).

On the other hand, patio lanterns are viewed by some to be junky, tacky and tasteless outdoor ornaments that should have dissapeared with the '80s. I have seen the occasional string of patio lanterns kicking around so they still exist and somebody somewhere is still decorating with them...

Paper lanterns can be a great addition to your outdoor decor; as long as the lantern usage is kept modern and tasteful.  For example, a single lantern is probably going to look outdated; however, several hung from differing lengths from a tree could be very tasteful.

Patio lanterns are a great way to light up your outside space. Limit yourself to one color so that you don't have a rainbow in your backyard!

I love the return of the patio lanterns! You can buy for $5.00 a piece at Bouclair and put them under your gazebo outside. they are also battery operated.

I love that Kim Mitchell song and patio lanterns remind me of family barbecues and summers spent with family and loved ones. So I'll say they are fun and whimsical decorations.

Tacky? Who cares.  Late evening BBQ's and parties look great with them.  They add a fun touch.

They are 'all in the eye of the beholder'.  :)    To each their own, but myself I wud prefer mini-white lights.
