Question of the Week: Is it Ever OK to Decorate with Faux Fruit?

Granny Smith Apple, crateandbarrel.com

Spring is well upon us and during this season of rebirth and renewal mother nature fills our world with a multitude of vibrant colours. Inspired by the natural colours found outdoors, I went shopping this past weekend for some decor accents in order to subtly introduce pops of colour into my space.

I concluded that flowers and fruit are the easiest ways to brighten up any space, but the reality of real flowers and fruit are that they just don't last forever. So for decorating longevity, I looked into faux flowers and fruit. I am definitely not a fan of faux flowers because they always look fake, but the quality of faux fruit these days can deceive the most discerning eye. I ended up picking up some faux apples because I honestly couldn't tell that they were fake and I plan on displaying them in a wire bowl on top of my fridge so from that distance the faux aspect will be less noticeable. I'll just have to remember not to eat them!

Is it ever OK to decorate with faux fruit? Or is faux fruit tacky?

Ahhhh....Everyone knows that faux fruit is just wrong in soo many ways. If You want a fruit bowl, go buy some fresh fruit. Same goes for flowers, go natural people. Make Your Own arrangement or simply purchase a single rose with ferns..It will last a week and make the room smell fresh and wonderful. I think They call it " Nose Gay "    Bye Bye, Danny

I voted against faux fruit, but now qualify that ......

my daughter had a selection of handcarved & painted wooden apples in her Gr. Grandmother's old brown mixing bowl. It looked wonderful in her country-style kitchen. It just depends on what quality faux fruit we're talking about!

Such incredible, almost edible, faux fruit on the market !!!! The coloring, weight, and varieties...not your mothers bag of mixed fruit fom the 70's. Definitely O.K.  !!!!

I have a lovely huge glass vase on a small commode in the foyer filled with fake oranges.  It looks phenomenal, adds brightness to the entrance and I'm continually asked if they are real (while they're picking one up!).  Tastefully done fake fruit is the way to go.  BTW I have a large basket of real fresh fruit just around the corner in the kitchen -- so it's important to know what works where!

I agree with the other commenters and that it depends on the quality of the fake fruit and where you decorate with them. I've seen some amazing fake fruit and some really fake looking fake fruit.

Either way, I feel there is nothing like the genuine thing.

Faux fruit = yay!  Faux flowers = nay!  I agree that fake flowers look exactly that - fake.  But there's something to be said about faux fruit.  Paul makes a great point, it's where you place the faux versus real which makes all the difference.

i'm really not sure why anyone would use fake fruit, it's a dust magnet and a real waste of our resources.  what is wrong with an edible display? 5-10 servings a day!

I have some amazing wooden fruit that I bought in Central America. The apples are especially life like, and have fooled my visitors. It all depends on the quality. But I agree, fake flowers rarely look real and are just dust collectors.

Faux fruit has come along way!  I have a bowl of glass colourful fruit I display on my table outside on the deck each summer.  I  think it looks inviting and  it's a little different.  I like different !

Fake fruit arrangements have their place when it is well done. For the dust, they are not that hard to clean.

The problem with real fruits is either your arrangement disappears as you eat them, or that you are OK with throwing away fruits every week. If you want to always have a dozen lemons in a glass bowl on a higher shelf, it could be the way. When you do a big party, replace them with a batch of real ones.

Ok here is the real deal...

If it is faux..then it should look faux..not a sad replica of the real thing...

I have seen a multitude of faux fruit in pewter, silver, glittered, mirrored and even pink...Those types of faux fruit are great..they add whimsy and are cool..anything other than that needs to fall from a tree in order to make it into my fruit bowl...

I agree with Anne ,nice name. It`s my middle .only I spell it Ann.lol.The quality of the fruit these day`s is amazing.Emagine that you splurge on quality fruit to alway`s have a base of fruit to build off of,ooohhh the possibilities are endless. The fresh fruit provide the smell and texture needed and the fake ones provide the base.Got it?If done correctly, fantastic!!!!!!!

I think it is Ok depending on the quality, setting etc.  These is some really nice and very realistic fake fruit out there as well as folk-artsy style that is quite interesting.

Faux fruit and flowers have greatly improved over the years.  No longer do you have blue roses but flowers that are so well done that you really do have to touch them to know.  Fruit is the same.  In the grand scheme of things does it really matter if someone has a fake fruit bowl.  Would you think less of them if they did?  and if so, what does that say about you?
