Bargain Saturday: Great Kitchen Reno Deals

A couple of Saturdays ago, we showed off Angie B.'s guest bedroom fabric bargain in response to our call for your bargain design finds. This week, David M. shares his kitchen reno deals: a granite countertop, cabinets, doors, knobs and more.

In David's words: Our dream kitchen included having a huge centre island, preferably topped in granite or stone. As we priced things out from the cabinets, cabinet doors, knobs, granite (and all other non-laminate surfaces!) we discovered that there was just no way we could afford to do it. But as luck would have it we were at Habitat for Humanity one day and this 8x4 piece of grey and white fleck granite was there. Again we were concerned about the price (these sizes range in price upwards of $1000); it was $250!! We also bought the four base cabinets, doors, knobs, etc. at Habitat. It took a couple of weeks to get everything because Habitat does not have "regular" stock items and so we had to wait and hunt around for everything we needed. So in the end, it did take a little bit of extra work and planning to do it ourselves and of course a bunch of people to help lift the granite into the kitchen. Ultimately though the whole project cost around $500. It is the centre piece of our kitchen and really the showpiece of the entire main floor.

Thanks, David!

Slammin'...

I love your island, it's gorgeous.  I wonder what Habitat place you went to.  I have gone to the Habitat Restore where I live and all that they ever have is garbage.

You lucked in.

Thanks David for saying which store you went to...it's too far for me though, I'm afraid.  I am in Ontario.

I bought a house recently and almost all of my renovations I have done with items bought from the Re-store...I hope you will have more articles on renovating with Re-store items.

Good job.  I live in a rental accommodation with a large kitchen but not a lot of cupboards. My landlord has ok"d my adding some additional ones (at my expense) so I have been surfing the web sites of my local Habitat stores and expect to make some purchases later this summer. Did you use the counter top "as is"  or have it cut?  I've been considering buying a used top from Habitat but would need it cut to size and am not sure how to go about arranging this. I am also wondering if there are any alternate sources. Is it possible to buy "off cuts" from stone retailers? Thanks for any ideas posted

We 're very lucky and used the counter top as-is...we were knocking down the wall seperating the kitchen and dining rooms so it fit perfect.

I believe any laminate counter top is not to difficult to cut if you have a steady hand with a circular or jig saw..Sorry I couldn;t help more..

Love your new kitchen island.  I too shop at Habitat for Humanity.  Was looking to put hardwood floors rather than laminate, throughout the main floor of our home but couldn't afford it.  Out of curiosity, I wandered into the local HFH in our town (Kingston, ON) and there was enough hardwood flooring to cover 200 sq. ft.  It wasn't enough, so I continued to frequent the store and eventually found more flooring in a different colour and we had it installed alternating the two colours and it looks amazing.  We've found many other things there too.  It's a great place if you're not in a hurry.
