Question of the Week: Are Indoor Water Features Extravagant or Tacky?

Indoor water features come in a variety of styles and sizes and they also have more benefits than meets the eye. The soothing sound of moving water can help to reduce unpleasant noise from the surrounding environment and create a calming and stress relieving effect. Breathing is made easier and the room temperature increases as a result of the humidity created by the evaporating water from the feature. And moving water naturally releases negative ions into the air, which in turn bond with air pollutants and carry them down to the floor reducing the amount of harmful air born particles in your living space. Personally, I own a small tabletop fountain and I quite enjoy the calming sound of the running water after a long hectic day.

On the contrary, indoor water features aren't always the most ideal decorations as they can be cumbersome, junky looking, and slightly pretentious.

I have two tabletop water fountains. I keep one in my front foyer to greet guests and the other one in my main bathroom. I like the peaceful sound of the water running.

I agree with John !

I like the candle one you've shown here. Most I don't really care for, & that's not a bad thing, as my cat loves to play in water. I can't imagine the mess she would make!

Sorry - can not deal with these.

Any store bought resin fountains are tacky and impossible to maintain. They get terrible looking hard water scale that doesn't come off and if you try to use CLR on it, the plastic erodes.  I do however think that a water fountain with natural materials like real rock and plants are beautiful - not mass produced, one of a kind by a professional crafter. They are a nice addition to decor and a great conversation piece. The sound of the water is very relaxing.

I think you should have had a third choice..I don`t consider them extravagant..some cheap ones may be a bit tacky...

I think there is a balance between tacky and extravagant - we have a 60's green glass bowl with some river rocks in it tucked into a corner with a gentle water flow - non intrusive it sort of disappears into the room but still gives us the calming water flow background ambiance.

Resin water fountains - like plastic flowers, fake trees and plastic statues - are tacky.  A fountain made out of natural stone could be interesting if it suits the rest of the decor.  In the end, I think that the maintenance and potential for water damage is not worth it.  I also agree with Marie - water sound not always a good thing!

Both-and a waste of water.

I don't like the table top ones, especially the fog producing ones---TACKY!!!

But, I think if you can imagine something different, water can be very relaxing!  Now, on that note, does anyone know how to construct a rain curtain??  I have an idea, but could use some input.  I think a 16' rain curtain inside would be awesome!!

I also agree.......resin fountains are EXTREEEEMLY tacky ,but I have a stainless 3 foot tube with a stainless ball the same size as the opening at the top of the tube sitting in water, with a submerged light and the water flows up through a hole in the center of the ball and then cascades down the ball.

Almost every time people enter my home one of the first things they say is W O W , love that fountain!!!!!!

I bought it  2 years ago at Dexterity on Queen St. West.

I suppose if you dabbled in Feng Shui and were Martha Stewart you might say "IT'S A GOOD THING to have an indoor water feature".

Personally they are not for me, but to each their own.   SMILES!

I've seen elegant, classy indoor water features and I've seen ones that are extremely tacky....just like any other decorating/furniture piece.
