Home Tour: A Movable Mini Home!

Spring is upon us, finally, and my travel bug is waking up.  I've always wanted to RV it across Canada, and while surfing the web in search of a classic rentable Airstream and other comely homes-on-the-move, I found the Solo Mini Home.  And I want one!!!  (What else is new.)

Solo Prototype; exterior and kitchen.

The Solo Mini Home does go a little bit beyond my two-week-long requirements, but it's AMAZING, and is part of Sustain Design Studio’s groundbreaking line of sustainable and off-grid RV’s, Travel Trailers, Park Model Homes and Manufactured Homes.

Solo Prototype; interior and bathroom.

Founder Andy Thomson has been a life-long enthusiast of affordable green building and low-impact living, and having completed his Architecture studies in Stuttgart, Germany, returned to Canada to eventually establish Sustain Design Studio.

The SOLO was the first full-scale prototype of the company’s goals to produce an affordable, sustainable, 100% off-grid trailer built on R2000 (a series of technical requirements for new home performance that go way beyond building codes. Every R-2000 home is built and certified to this standard) design principals.

You need to upgrade your Flash Player to 9 or greater

Available for sale, the newest version of the 8’x36’ SOLO snagged a Canadian Design Exchange Award for Residential Interior Design in 2008, and starts at $139,900 CAD.

Here’s Andy’s walk-through of his SOLO, which was featured on HGTV’s Small Space Big Style.

Looks incredible, but my only question is, where do the kids sleep??  I can’t quite figure out if they all sleep in one bed, or if the adults sleep in the downstairs living room/bedroom.  I don’t know if I could handle such close kid/parent proximity (and I LOVE my daughter very much.)

What do you think of this idea?  Would you buy one?  Do you know anyone who has?

Interesting, it would be easy to pick out in your community. I think that the novelty could wear off quickly. I don't think that this would work for most, maybe for young professionals that haven't had years to accumulate  "stuff".

The upside is, the interior appears to be well designed as it takes a positive adavantage of space. Also  it wud require minimal housework.

The downside is, the exterior to me resembles an elaborate mobile office and/or an overseas cargo shipping 'container'.     Would I purchase one?   NO!   With no intention to insult those who wud choose one as their abode.
