Splurge vs. Steal: Elegant Stemware

My cupboards are filled with an eclectic selection of wine glasses: hand me downs, one-off purchase, you name it. But I'd actually really like to get my hands on a set of four or more glasses. It would be nice to have everyone at a get-together drink from the same type of glass (these are the small things that make me happy).

The splurge pick (below, right), Riedel's Vitis series, is my favourite; I like the thin stem and less angular shape. You can find these for $65-85US for a set of two.

But who can sneeze at the steal I found in IKEA's IVRIG series? At $2.99 each you might not mind circulating them at a rowdier function!

I recently blogged about these very wine glasses (and another similarly-shaped glass) on Foodtv.ca.

Comments:

I bought wineglasses from Walmart, of all places, and they've lasted me five years (knock on wood). They're stemless, which I prefer because I can get a little spilly!

I have a few stemless ones, but I drink white wine most of the time, so I like it to stay as cool as long as possible. But stemless is a good idea for a party ;)

Believe it or not, for 'large' gatherings in lieu of my good crystal, I am still using stemmed glasses that I purchased years ago from Woolco.   (Nothing like aging myself.)    As I don't like mis-matched beverage ware I always have ensured I buy more than six of one kind.

(Just another oddity of mine.....smiles.)

Off topic:  I have tried several times to post a comment on Elana's "Question of the Week", however it appears there MIGHT be a glitch on that page  (as notice lots of votes) but no comments.   Maybe if you cud be so kind as to  mention it to her.   (Thank you!)

The Ikea glasses would be my choice since I tend to want to change glassware often and would definitely feel I could do that without paying $30 plus for each glass.  Also, with Ikea, you can have different glasses for white and red without breaking the bank.  Don't forget those wine glass charms too.  Without mis-matched glasses, your guests might not be able to identify their glasses without the charms.
