Question of the Week: Are Suncatchers Pretty Decorations or Tacky Window Decals?

Spring is just around the corner and with the longer sunlight filled days ahead of us what better way to catch the beaming rays of sunshine then with a suncatcher or a lightcatcher. These decorative ornaments are usually made of colored glass and come in a variety of shapes and sizes: from insects and animals to landscape scenes and celestial shapes. They are usually hung off of a window with a suction cup and a hook or they are suspended from a wire or string.

Often considered the visual equivalent to wind chimes, suncatchers have both avid enthusiasts that adore these colourful ornaments and scornful décor snobs that consider lightcatchers to be nothing more than cheap pieces of colored glass that clutter up window spaces. Personally, I don’t mind suncatchers as long as they are simple and not larger than the size of the palm of your hand, otherwise they just look junky...

Are suncatchers pretty decorations or tacky window decals? Leave a comment and let us know.

They CAN be pretty....but most I have seen are tacky looking.

March 16, 2009 4:37 PM

I think if I had a cottage-perhaps.  For my home-definately tacky!

March 16, 2009 5:16 PM

Yes, they can be tacky, but used with discretion,  then can actually be very pretty. We have several bird feeders around our deck, so we have window decals  to help prevent the birds from flying into our windows. It seems to work, we have had no dead birds for a long time. Some birds hit the window, but end up stunned but not dead. So there are good purposes for window decorations.

Suncatchers are cute.

March 16, 2009 5:24 PM

tacky junk

March 16, 2009 5:55 PM

Very much tacky!

March 16, 2009 6:56 PM

Agreed. Tacky.

March 16, 2009 10:23 PM

I'd rather hang myself than hang a suncatcher in one of my windows.

March 17, 2009 10:29 AM

Tacky and so '80s.

March 17, 2009 11:20 AM

Jimmy, that's funny.

March 17, 2009 11:35 AM

I don't mind suncatchers if they're in the kitchen, a child's bedroom, or such. I'd draw the line at using them for front room decor.

March 18, 2009 3:38 AM

Tacky, don't like them at all

March 18, 2009 8:10 AM

Better than some things I see in homes

March 18, 2009 8:34 AM

How about wall murals?  I have seen a full wall mural I love but I'm now wondering if it will look cheap and nasty.  Its not cheap, around $300.

March 18, 2009 9:11 AM

Depends! If the sun catchers are real stained glass - they can be beautiful.

March 18, 2009 9:34 AM

Why does Grandma's creepy parlour spring to mind when I think of sun catchers?

March 18, 2009 9:52 AM

I think suncatchers are realy tacky and those wind chimes drive me nuts.

March 18, 2009 10:23 AM

Beautiful hand-crafted stained glass window hangings are works of art. Anything plastic is not. (IMHO)

March 18, 2009 10:29 AM

One Chihuly glass or Swarovski crystal in the kitchen is nice,. Many plastic imitations anywhere, NOT.

March 18, 2009 10:37 AM

Like anything else, depends on where they are and what they are.  I like them!

March 18, 2009 11:39 AM

The epitome of bad taste. Sooo tacky

March 18, 2009 11:40 AM

I do stained glass and have made suncatchers for family and friends. They all loved them and hang them in their windows. I have some in my window. I never thought of them as tacky. It brightens my day to look at them as I eat at my kitchen table looking out the window.

March 18, 2009 12:17 PM

Some suncatchers are rather nice. Depending how many a person has and the location. The wind chimes I really like.

March 18, 2009 12:44 PM

they can be beautiful, also tacky, i go for real stain glass, also be careful in to much sun as can cause a fire by hot sun shinning through for a long period of time. i learned this lesson. but can be so relaxing to see.

March 18, 2009 12:53 PM

tacky tacky tacky

March 18, 2009 12:58 PM

I have different shaped and coloured crystals from old chandeliers hanging in a sunny little window on my second floor, I don't think it's tacky, but it's not your mass produced type sunflowers or dolphins.

March 18, 2009 1:00 PM

All of mine are beautiful handcrafted stained glass ones .They are hanging in my den and give me a smile when I remember where I bought them on travels.

March 18, 2009 1:06 PM

Ok in a child's room but that's it.

March 18, 2009 1:55 PM

Have to agree with Jimmy...too tacky for words...goes for those 'crystal' bobbles as well.

March 18, 2009 3:09 PM

Soooooo tacky!

March 18, 2009 3:58 PM

Well, I think they are beautiful. I have them in my kitchen window over the sink and just love looking at them. They are all real cut glass though. I do not like the plastic version and would not use them. Not tacky at all some of mine are very expensive ones.

March 18, 2009 4:21 PM

Sun catchers can be coyote ugly just like tinny harsh windchimes.  But a single high quality one, as well as a beautifully tuned windchime, can be pleasing additions.  Quality & limited quantity are key to me..

March 18, 2009 4:55 PM

A good quality one can look beautiful in a window especially if it actually catches the sun.  I also like hanging the large crystals that shoot rainbows all over the room when the sun catches them just right.

March 18, 2009 6:19 PM

I used to think they were tacky, until I had so many birds hit my kitchen window. Now, I have several small ones. I even had to put a couple on my patio door. I'm more concerned about the birds than looking tacky.

March 18, 2009 7:39 PM

Some of them are beautiful ,but not for my windows .I would like to caution some of your readers ,that real cyrstal from chandeleirs hanging in or near a window is a fire hazard. god bless.

March 18, 2009 10:41 PM

It depends on which window you hand it in. If it actually catches the sun & is pretty, then why not...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and I behold some of them as beautiful.  Adjust you scorners!

March 19, 2009 10:17 AM

Depends on the actual sun catcher. Some can be beautiful works of art, others can be..ugly and tacky.

March 20, 2009 1:18 PM

If they are hand made stained glass, they can be beautiful, especially if there is a prism in it.

March 20, 2009 3:13 PM

Though I am not truly a big fan of them;  I admit on two occasions, I have chosen  stain glass ones as gifts in anticipation that it might  add a little sunshine to those who were confined to a Nursing Home environment.   They loved them.     "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Wishing you a HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING Elana!

March 20, 2009 4:31 PM

......and to you TERRY!   (Sorry about that.)

March 20, 2009 4:32 PM

Thanks for all the great comments everyone, especially the comments about suncatchers possibly being fire hazards!

Happy first day of Spring to everyone!!!

March 20, 2009 4:48 PM

I received a large stained glass window decoration from my husband ( I picked it out he bought it LOL) says welcome and has 4/5 cats(I love cats).

I hung in in the kitchen window over the sink( I just finished painting my kitchen too). Looks fabulous when the sun hits it and very lovely when it doesn't. So I think it depends on what the person likes because their "friends" know what the suncatcher people like and expect it in their house..whether cats, dogs, birds, etc...

March 20, 2009 8:47 PM

I think they can be absolutely beautiful, but I resist hanging them in my home.  They can work in kids' rooms.

March 20, 2009 9:23 PM

I think they are beautiful but would never hang one in my home

March 21, 2009 7:39 AM

I have what most people here think as tacky on some of my windows and I love them.  I change them around with the seasons and really like the way they catch the light.  Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, I guess.

March 21, 2009 5:12 PM

I think that they can look good if they are used in the right way. Maybe they just suit some people's decor more than others. I think that it's just important that your hoouse looks like a home and if sun catchers are part of what makes your house feel like that, then go ahead and put them up!
