Bargain Saturdays: Design on a Dollar

I have a bit of an obsession with those little buck-a-piece decor boxes you can pick up at any Dollarama. They're cute, functional and come with many different patterns. What's not to love? Every time I'm doing some dollar store shopping, I like to see if there are any new, cute patterns. I've got some at the office, on book shelves, on top of the fridge...

Do you have any super cheap design finds in your home? I'm talking under five or ten bucks here -- picture frames, pillows, a bargain piece of furniture at the local Sally Ann, you name it.

Would love for you to send us a picture that we can post here. If you've got something you'd love to share, email us at stylesheet (@) hgtv (.) ca, or if you've got a flickr account, drop a picture in our Style Sheet photo group.

I also love the dollar store and I keep my earrings and bracelets in $1 glass bowls. This was after I tried to spend $9.99 on one of the same bowls at Urban Outfitters, but it was a misplaced sale sticker. It was for their jewellery display, not for sale, but the helpful sales girl told me they were from Dollarama!

The thing about these 'dollar stores' is that they deal in goods that are usually discontinued, end-of-line, near sell by date or otherwise surplus to requirements.  There is often nothing wrong with the product itself.  So, if you do find a bargain or two consider stocking up while you can; you might not get another chance.  Consumables like cleaning products and food (watch the use by date) are a must.

I needed a quick fix for my aging linoleum flooring (31 x 14 ft space) but didn't want to spend a fortune.  I wanted something to get me through maybe 2-3 years until I renovate the entire space (kitchen/family room).

I went to the dollar store (Dollarama) and got peel & stick tiles that look like stone tiles for only 3/$1.oo.  That's only 33 1/3 cents a square foot!  The transformation was amazing and I feel confident it will get me through for 2-3 years!

I love those boxes!  I bought 2 different sizes that perfectly fit small and large napkins...it made my day...ok, my week! everytime I have friends or family over, out come the boxes, they're pretty on the table and the damask pattern goes perfectly with my decor.
