Photo Challenge: Show Us Your Creative Storage Solutions

I'm hesitant to make too many storage commitments in my current rented abode, other than tossing around some boxes and baskets. I just don't want to spend a lot of money on semi-permanent items.

But next year, when my boyfriend and I move into our currently-under-construction 600sq. ft. two-bedroom condo (yes, you read that right), we're going to have some serious storage issues. So, from time-to-time, I tend to preoccupy myself with storage. I can hardly wait to hang extra cabinetry, install shelves, hooks, closet systems and more. Maybe this is what I need for ultimate organization, or maybe it's a disaster in the making...?

And that's what this month's Photo Challenge is all about: your creative, decorative and innovative solutions to your storage woes. (Read more about how to participate below).

Clockwise from top: this basic bench was turned into extra storage on episode 3 of Pure Design; In an episode of Home Heist Colin and Justin turned this unused nook into an efficient work station with extra storage; Sarah Richardson made the most of this small home office with furniture that had lots of storage.

Here's how to participate in our Photo Challenge:

  • If you're getting your storage act together this month, we'd love to see befores and afters. But if you've already got some gorgeous and functional storage you're proud of, send it to us now.
  • Email your picture(s) to stylesheet(at)hgtv(.)ca by February 28, 2009.
  • Alternatively, if you've got a flickr account, you can post your picture(s) and description directly to our Style Sheet photo group

When I was a little girl, my mother had  a dresser drawer where our lifelong collection of family photos were tossed in at random. When she needed to find a particular photo we would end up sitting on the floor in her bedroom, spending a wonderful afternoon "walking down memory lane", laughing and listening to the many stories captured on camera. It's one of my favourite memories. Perfect organization isn't always the best solution!

I live in a very small space and I found a unique way to store my long necklaces, from a storage store or a dollar store pick up a hanger for ties, and hang your necklaces on those, you can sort them by size and colour etc. I also have a large DVD collection and find the boxes take up too much room, a unique way to store them is to use a CD/DVD travel case

Another great storage tip within the office area is using the magnetic spice containers you can store loose items found on your desk, thumb tacks, rubber bands, stickers, stamps etc. I have this unique napkin holder which someone gave me and I use it on my desk for sorting my bills and papers. Another great tip is muti-functional furniture, it does again depend on your budget but Ikea has some wonderful items if you are on a budget, I have a office that closes up when I'm finished, I also have an Expedit unit which come in various sizes and Ikea has inserts that go into it so you can have open and closed space. My kitchen leaves some thing to be desired, and again space is limited, I highly recommend jars, and storing racks, without them I never find anything.

Make sure the kids take all their stuff the first time they move out.

How do I propose my jouse for may favourite show of all time Home Heist?

In our quest room I have a clear rubbermaid container with a tight lid that  fits under the bed. In this I keep the quest sheets and pillow cases , along with a nice set of towels one set for each guest. This way when guests arrive I don't have to be looking for clean linen, I just pull out my container.Works great

I love pins and my collection filled more drawers and boxes than I care to think about. They were also hidden and too beautiful to be hidden. So I took a 3 foot length of upolstery fabric(it could be as long as you need) and cut the width the length of a hanger and sewed the top edge over it. It hangs on the front of my closet door. You could also just use a straight wooden pant clip hanger to avoid any sewing. I can now see about 120 pins at any one time and just rotate my collection seasonally!

As I sew  as a hobby, I have a large surplus of  pre-threaded bobbins. For them  I use pocketed shoe bags that are just thumb tacked to the wall.  The best are actually the cheap ones that you buy in the $-store as they are usually  see-through clear plastic which makes color coding a snap.

I also use them for storing Artist/Craft supplies.  (ie: Brushes/pens/inks, glues,  etc.etc.)   They are a very economical yet functional means of storage!
