Boy Vs. Girl Room Makeover

This week on Home Heist, Colin and Justin transformed an unsightly suburban home where kids come first and style comes last. Two bedrooms – one for a boy and the other for a girl – get stylish, kid-friendly makeovers.

First Up: The Boy Room

Before
To be honest, this before photo kind of gives me the willies. I'm sure the homeowners' meant for the painted hand prints to be a fun DIY decor project for the kids but the final result comes off looking like a scene straight out of a grizzly horror flick.

After
The bold red and orange colour combination mixed with the geometric pattern certainly makes for a dramatic makeover. If this was any space other than a kids' room I may not have liked it as much.

Next: The Girl Room

Before
One word describes this room: boring. From the pale pink walls to the shabby curtain that looks more like a bed sheet, this room definitely needed a Colin and Justin intervention.

After
By trading up pale pink for hot pink, Colin and Justin created a space that makes me wish I was 12 years old again. Funky wall stencils and a shag area rug complete this look.

The verdict: Both are fabulous. Maybe it’s favouritism but the girl in me loves the hot pink room.

Have your say. Which room do you like better? Write a comment and let us know.

Love the girls hot pink room, my daughter's room is the light pink right now, and wants to change it, so I will see if she likes the hot pink better!!

I think that the boys room looks awful! It looks like a bad Cosby Sweater from the eighties. I suppose it is better than the room that looks like someone was killed in and left the bloody hand marks all around the room.

Don't get e wrong Collin and Justin I love your show but the Cosby sweater is not going over well with me.

January 22, 2009 2:26 PM

well when i was growing up i was a tomboy but i do half to admit the cosby sweater is definetly not working for me either and the hot pink room is definetly 10 times better then the cosby sweater.

Both rooms are terrible.  Why would anyone put pink carpet in a room!  What a waste of money.

January 23, 2009 1:31 PM

Oh my God they did it again. Colin and Justin do room after room beautiful each time. Guess I like the boys room most but I have two little guys under eleven and they would both love this.  STUNNING!

Both rooms are god aweful (and i'm being nice) they shouldn't call themselves designers they don't even know good design if it hit them in the face they shouldn't have their own t.v. show .

January 23, 2009 4:49 PM

Clearly both befores were in desperate need of a makeover. The rooms are small and I think C and J once again brought colour, light, pattern and fun into limited living space! The younger set would feel uplifted and inspired in either of these private spaces....cudos again to you!.....and to the naysayers like or leave it!!!!....J and C are working, established & in demand, lovable designers and scots to boot!! Love you....only in Canada eh!

I like both rooms, the boys room would be even better if they had more time to have done the more detailed paint detail that they wanted to do.  Kids should have bright rooms to enjoy.

I would tone down some of the hot pink in the girls rooms, scatter rugs of hot pink would be cut down some of the pink and easily changed.

I love Home Heist and watch it every week.  I would love for them to come to my house and do a makeover, everyone is up for a change sooner or later.  Not all tastes are liked by all, but in this case, both rooms were tasteful and i'm thinking of doing my daughter's room the same way, but instead of flowers, she'll want floating hearts.

Keep up the great designs Colin & Justin.

Great design from the guys, i saw this show and was very impressed by how those guys did it without spending too much dollars.  I guess the big money went onthat awesome living room and it huge sling doors.  My fave show on Homes and Gradens,

ps - i still cant get used to saying HGTV, it sounds wierd

Boys room is great.  Girls is way too much pink, and I like pink.

I saw the show (my mom called to tell me it was on b/c she wanted me to get idea for my own young son and daughter's room). I have to say, I do love the boys room, but that would really take some time to replicate...I love pink, but the girls room is a bit too tween for such a young child. That being said, both new rooms are awesome in comparison to the before rooms!

January 25, 2009 3:43 PM

LOVE the girls room - suitable for a pre-teen (maybe up to 13) although too tidy for a young girl and to impersonal. Can't stand the boys room. I'm an interior designer and thinks these choices are horrible. The color scheme just doesn't make sense....doesn't flow....no theme. There are so many choices and ideas out there...this ooks like a bad Charlie Brown shirt.

January 25, 2009 5:47 PM

I am not sure why the design lesson given to the parents about buying good foundational pieces for your child to grow with wasn't followed for this episode. I like the floral decals in the girl's room (pretty against the white wall) but combined with the pink and black walls, dresser and pink floor (!), the overall effect is a bit overwhelming.

Having said this I loved the episode where they did the above-garage retreat for the client's mom, and the "clutter lady's" blue damask wallpapered bedroom. I look forward to seeing what they do next.

January 25, 2009 6:37 PM

I actually really love both of them but love the boys' room a little bit more because it is bright and would be great for kids.  I also love the girls' room but think that the guys should have gone with a nice neutral laminate floor and bright pink area rug so that it could easily be changed up.

January 25, 2009 10:26 PM

perosonally i think that the boys room looks like it ws made for a young girl, like a girl that dosen't like pink. the room is awesome but for a boy??? i would think that they should have done it in a blue or green etc.

January 26, 2009 1:27 AM

I like the boys room. and I would like to know why they didn't reuse the iron bed in the girls room.  These design shows need to start reusing what is already there instead of filling the dump.

January 26, 2009 11:31 AM

Kinda like both, but not keen on the pink carpet, otherwise I think these young designers have the best eye on TV,  Good to see their bold use of tone.  I wonder what they'd reckon of my house, it's REALLY heavily decorated and maybe even too bright for them!  Tell you what Id like - Id like to see what the guys own place is like in Toronto.  Brightly designed or minimal???? Thatd be interesting! Mrs B Flynn, Toronto

Sarah Richardson, Colin and Justin and Tommy from Sarahs Show - best on TV.  Would love to see them al on one show one day,

Coleen DavidsonAnd just to get teh complaining out of the way these people should do some shows over this way!

January 26, 2009 3:08 PM

you guys do such a good job, working with kids room i wish you can come to my house one day. hopefully one day i can get a job in what you do.

January 26, 2009 3:15 PM

I really like to know where was the fabric sourced which was used for the upholstery and also the designs on the walls? Is this a wallpaper?

Great room!!

January 26, 2009 4:29 PM

Inspiring design, thank you.  Lots of great ideas on the show, really liking it. Think I like this years even more than last years, seems to be a great deal more design to add to the high atmosphere

January 26, 2009 5:35 PM

Great headboard in the boys version.  Clever, saw that on the show and liked it then too! Al xoxoxox

January 27, 2009 10:41 AM

Guess its a gender thing but I dont like (just my taste) the pink room though if I had a daughter Im sure she's like it.  I really like the boys room and think Collin and Justin did a really neat job of that.  As a single Dad on limited resources it seems to look affordable and Id love to know where the checked fabric came from like another reader asked here to.  There should be lists for readers of this and other sites.  Id also wonder who I should get to do window blinds etc for me in the GTA?

My favourite show from these guys is the one where they did a priests house a couple of weeks ago.  Wicked funny and that was a beautiful kitchen, I can dream of that for me and the kids.

Id like to say thanks for the ideas from this and other shows.  I also cant get enough of Sarah R and I realy like the shows with flipping etc.  Though NOT Flipping Out.

Guess I'm biased cos I knew these lads some fifteen years back when they still lived in Scotland but I love anything they do. Keep up the  awesome work lads and I hope to one day meet you again if you ever make it over to Vancouver.

PS - I tried reaching you at HGTV when you got to Toronto but they wouldnt give me a number.  Are you on Facebook?

March 20, 2009 2:21 AM

I cant beleive the big difference in both rooms. It relly shows what you can do to a room and how much people will admire the wonderfull change.

I love the pink its soooooooo HOT!!!!!

April 22, 2009 7:01 AM

The girls room is perfect and the boys room would be better if it had a better patten.
