Bryan Baeumler and Samantha Pynn Predict 2009's Decor Trends

Bryan Baumler, Samantha Pynn

I asked HGTV hosts Bryan Baeumler from Disaster DIY and Samantha Pynn from Pure Design to look into their expert crystal balls and tell us what they see happening in home decor this year.

Vanessa: What colours do you think will be important in 2009?

Bryan Baeumler: A lot of people are going with white or off-white and using furniture and art to bring some colour in. Taupe is still a pretty popular safe choice but some are adding colour with accent walls. We recently painted a room Dill Pickle Green this year…and then painted over it.

Samantha Pynn: I think that colour in general will be important. Lavender, grey and blue are all on trend and very easy to work with, but really it's about finding colours that speak to you. It used to be that there was one hot colour but people are really starting to decorate their own homes, so I don't think that you can peg one colour as the hot colour of the year.

Paint ColoursSome of Samantha's paint picks from Pure Design: Benjamin Moore's Violet Mist (CC-880), Stonington Grey (HC-170) and Polar Sky (HC-790).

V: What's a good way to incorporate colour into a neutral decor scheme?

SP: Colour can be incorporated in many different ways. It just depends on how daring you are. You can add pops of colour with accessories like pillows and throws or paint a small space like a powder room. Make a bolder colour statement with patterned window treatments or a bright or patterned upholstered sofa.

V: Will eco style continue or will shopping for sustainable choices just be integrated into all design?

BB: I think eco style will continue to grow in popularity, especially as prices come down and more products become available. It’s a relatively new phenomenon and as with anything, the longer it’s out there, the more products that will become available.

V: Will the economic atmosphere impact home decor?

SP: Yes, we're in uncertain economic times, but that doesn't mean that sophistication and luxe have flown out the window. We need a little glamour now more than ever. And you don't have to spend a bundle to add a little sparkle to your home. I think that initially we'll see classics like linen upholstery, fabric and tailored lines (think the modern wing chair) but in the future, colour, pattern and statement pieces will prevail. Oh yes, and long live the nail head detail. We'll see nail heads everywhere, but again this is a trend that will last.

V: How can 2009’s trends easily (and inexpensively) be incorporated into a home?

BB: Good question! I think if people use their imagination and aren’t scared to try something different, there’s limitless potential. Using off-cuts and reclaimed materials to create unique designs and accents is a good way to save a few bucks and have something a little different than the neighbours.

SP: I like to draw a parallel between dressing your home and dressing yourself. Just as you wouldn't buy the entire outfit off the mannequin, don't go too crazy with all new things. Work with what you have. I always start there. Rethink floor plans, move furniture and accessories around from one room to another and then layer in a few trends. If you buy something trendy that doesn't work the way you thought it would, don't fret. Move it somewhere else. I bought an orange belt for my jeans and I just couldn't make it work, I tightened the same belt around the waist of my old black sweater, and I had a whole new favorite outfit.

Talk about boring colours for this year. I grew up with boring off whites and light blue and grey how depressing. My idea is that everyone has there own personality so just jump in and add exciting and calming colors, the sky is the limit so just play with color. My house is rust and moss green that compliment each other my bathroom is lilac so have fun and do what you want buck the trends I always have

LOVE the colours predicted for 2009!  Very soft and soothing.  Everyone certainly has "their own personality" and we all enjoy a different asthetic in our spaces.  Calming colours do not need to be translated as "boring", not everyone embraces loud, contrasting colour!

I think its all up to the individual. Yes there are the rednecks out there that will put pink and lime green on the walls( yes I've seen this & YUCK!), but warm colours never go out of style. I think Samatha's colours are very cold and if she were to use them in her home, she'd change it within 3 years(and what about accessories and furniture?). Normal (households who earn 50-80K) can't keep changing as it costs $$$$. Invest in warm colours, higher baseboards and neutral decor, and it will be like Mike Holmes says all the time "Do it right the first time". Your home will apprediate it and you'll have more money in YOUR pocket in the long run.

It seams that people are looking for soft colors all the time. I used to work for Bergdorf Goodman in the home decoration years ago, and always being amazed that the majority of customers would gravitate toward pastels colors. But strong colors are so much more fun. I painted my all house in sunny bright yellow 7 years ago. We have a lot of trims and windows, that we choose to leave white.  It was so bright and happy we had hard time changing it. The sunny yellow goes so well with dark or light furniture, and art work! I couldn't find a color to overpower it. Now we decided to do the main walls in a deep eggplant color, and have all the details (niche etc.. ) in white along with the windows and trims. I am having my furniture painted in white, and all the sofas covered in white fabric, to give some contrast. The dark walls don't make the space gloomy at all. All you see is the white. Anyway, if we get bored, it's just paint... we'll paint it again. But at least we took a chance, and I am so glad that my house isn't the same as the ones of my friends...

I do think the modern trends are a little boring, however after years of exciting colors with interesting textures and individual decorating themes it only seems likely to go back to late 80s early 90s neutrals and light washes of color. With the current economic situation it is understandable that people will gravitate towards colors and themes they can live with for longer periods of time, even if they do not love them. These colors and trends could be done interesting and well, however I worry the Do-It-Yourselfers will end up with boring beige and lack luster lavender and end up going back to avacado next year.

I don't feel any colour is boring. Color choice is personal . I get bored with my surroundings quickly, so I keep my my walls, large furniture, etc  neutral so I can afford to change accessories or whatever as often as I want. Beige can be beautiful, so can pink and lime green. In the end there is no right answer, everyone's home should be a reflection of themselves and not what some magazine or designer said it should look like. ( an exception is when selling) So do what you want and enjoy it.

Like Heather said ' Colour choice is personal' but there is one thing everyone needs to consider. Unless you live alone, the other people you live with have their own personal choices too. Get input in what they feel the colour scheme for the room should be. Also get advice from an impartial source like a friend or another family member. For the colour in my condo bathroom, i could not make up my mind, so i narrowed it down to 10 choices (yes it was that difficult), had my partner pick out his top 5 and then from those 5 asked my parents to pick their favourite 1. That colour became our colour and we haven't wanted to change it yet because we love it. For the living room colour, my partner and I both did the Behr online colour scheme, turns out we both enjoy the same schemes so picking a colour was never easier. Definately recommend it, even if you don't by behr paint.

I am unable to understand this post. But well some points are useful for me.

I LOVE lime green and bubble gum pink!  I don't get tired of the two.... especially when they are put together!  (Oh, and I DID put these colors on the walls in my kids bedroom and they were great, tons of fun!)

I think the colors are exactly what is in style. I believe alot of the new colors are from shows like Sarah Richardson's. She can take one shade of grey, blue, pink, or whatever and add 6 or 7 colors close to the original and make a masterpiece. Have you ever seen her finished projects? Just amazing. The main point is stick with one subtle color and stick with the same theme. This is the new style. Thanks Sarah

Our living environments are nothing but a canvas that should be a reflection of our own taste.  It is good to know the trends for the catwalk to sell, but we are Kings and Queens of our own nests, as owners we know the palette that suit our decor best.

Those colours are far, far too cold for me to live with in my space day to day. I'll stay with warm colours that make me feel cozy. Those pastels are brrrrrrr!!

I love the colours Samantha picked for 2009! If you keep the walls light and neutral you can have more fun adding bright colourful art! I think Samantha's show Pure Design is beautiful.

Samantha does great work. However I tune in just to look at her. She is so cute and adorable. Just looking at her beautiful face and delightful smile makes my day. Her talent to design is awesome.
