Hanukkah Style and Menorah Makeovers

Hanukkah is not really like Christmas. As holidays go, it’s got a lot less paraphernalia. What this used to mean is a limited choice in contemporary Hanukkah décor, but this year, I’ve noticed just how untrue that’s become. I did a little perusing of the things that are on offer and short-listed – I think you’ll agree – some really good looking finds.

The Menorah Makeover

It used to be that ‘traditional’ was the only nice word you could use to describe the mostly gaudy (sorry bubbie) menorahs the world had to offer.  These days however, the traditional nine-stick candelabra shows off some ingenious design and creativity.

Clockwise from the top: Jonathan Adler's "Skyline" menorah, Shlomi Shillinger's modular "Cube" menorah, Tamara Baskin's "Joseph's Coat" fused glass menorah, Orna Cohen-Boteach's modular "Olive Branch" handmade, pewter menorah.

Hanukkah Tabletop Style

It’s all about blue, silver and white – the traditional colour scheme – for this Jewish holiday, which makes it easy to improvise outside of specialty seasonal décor.

Clockwise from the top: "Kallt" cotton tablecloths from Ikea, Dreidel placecard holders from Crate & Barrel, "Astor" stainless apetiser plate from Crate & Barrel, "Diod" blue drinking glass from Ikea.

Hanukkah for Kids

Look at these cute things!  I love that adorable dreidel table cloth and the 8 Days of Hanukkah calendar can be turned into a great craft for those inclined.

Happy Holidays!

Comments:

I am not Jewish, however I often stop and admire Hanukkah decor. I believe it is the sense of purity and simplicity that attracts me to it.  It is really quite wonderful that more Retailers appear to be carrying it. (Pier 1 even had a great selection this year.)

Thank you for posting our menorahs! We are trying to bring  style to Judaica in general and really appreciate you helping to spread the word that their are now modern options.  Happy Hanukkah!
