Question of the Week: What's Your Favorite Holiday Heirloom?

The holiday season is upon us and on my way home the other night I was dazzled by all of the brightly lit decorations that twinkled above the city streets. Seeing these decorations was my cue to begin thinking about how to decorate my home this holiday season. I always choose a contemporary color scheme which usually consists of a couple of colours for both my indoor and outdoor decor. However, when it comes to my Christmas tree, I follow a more traditional style so that I am able to display all of my ornaments and holiday heirlooms that have been passed down or collected from family and friends over the years.

Each year we have a huge holiday celebration and it is customary for each guest to bring an ornament to add to our tree. With each passing year our holiday ornament collection has grown significantly and one of my favorite holiday past times is to marvel at the variety of ornaments and to remember each person that brought each specific ornament.

It's definitely hard to pick a favorite as they are all special to me and each decoration holds a place in my heart, but my favorite would have to be a wooden nutcracker that my grandfather handpainted for me when I was a child. I remember watching him meticulously paint the nutcracker's face and then, when it was dry, we hung it on our tree together. This holiday heirloom always reminds me of him and I get all warm and fuzzy whenever I think about it...

What's your favorite holiday heirloom? Leave a comment and let us know.

Comments:

My favourite heirloom is a ceramic Santa ornament which was part of the Hallmark collection from around 1980.  This is one of the few precious memories I have of my Mom who passed away in 1984.  This ornament is on display year round in my hutch, which was also my Mom's.

My favourite holiday heirloom is a glass angel that belonged to my grandmother. When I was a kid we would decorate our tree and the angel would be the last decoration to go on the tree and because I was the youngest I always got to put her on the top of the tree. After both of my parents passed on I claimed the angel and my x-mas tree isn't complete without her. Now the honour of placing the angel on the top of the tree belongs to my youngest son.

My favorite heirloom is not a possession, but traditions.  The things that mean to most to me during the holidays is our strong emphasis on family.  Everyone has an ornament with their name on it and we put them on the tree together to signify 'building our family'.  We bring them out of their own boxes and place them on the tree so that everyone is represented on the tree and in our hearts.

My favourite ornament belonged to my grandmother who passed away in a house fire in the early 60's.  It is a glass bird that has wisky things for tail feathers and it is carefully put on the tree each year in a place of honour.  As I child I remember my Mom doing the very same thing, but unfortunately she passed away in 1983.

My favorite item is a collection of ornaments that my husband and I have collected for each year we have been together.   Each year we pick out an ornament for our tree.  One that has a lot of memories for me is the one we picked up the year my father died when we went to the furneral.  It reminds me of all the memories the family had when I was growing up.

My favorite heirloom is not something you tuch or a possession of some kind...I love the traditions, all the family gatherings, the ambiance that Christmas brings...and especially the time before Christmas...the waiting....I always loved this, since I am a little girl... I guess that the Christmas spirit kept me beleiving in miracles...

My favorite new heirloom is a pack of glass birds which I purchased last year. As a child we used to have glass birds with the 'wisky things for tails' as Debbie already described.  Those ornaments all broke because they were so fragile and they just couldn't stand the pressure of 4 children decorating the tree. Now, as an adult, I am the only one who has a fondness for the new glass birds and also the only one who can remember them from years ago.
