Splurge vs. Steal: Apron-Front Harvest Sinks

Personally, I think these Apron-Front Harvest sinks are what kitchen dreams are made of, but unfortunately, for many of us those dreams get instantly quashed by the very heavy price tag.

When my husband and I were ‘freshening up’ our 1960s kitchen, I tried to make the harvest sink dream fly, but was instantly reality checked when I went out looking for one. Until I went to IKEA that is.

We ended up buying the $99 DOMSJÖ inset version because we were pinching every penny, but I wanted to share with you all that the DOMSJÖ sink indeed comes in the apron-front model, and it’s only $249 (below image, top right)!

Clockwise from the top: Trent sink, $899, from Ginger's Bath, Ikea's DOMSJÖ Apron-Front sink, $249, Kohler's Apron-Front sink, approx. $1390, Franke Apron-Front sink, approx. $1195.

I’ve surfed the web for comparable ones to no avail, and although I don't for a second doubt the finery of the finds above, I can attest to the fact that my DOMSJÖ is now almost three years-old, and holding up quite well.

Has anyone else discovered a super deal on these dreamy sinks?  If so, please share!

Comments:

I love apron sinks! My only sadness is having only one kitchen.. and only one sink.  In being an interior designer, I DO get to help others buy sinks, so it helps.  I've found other apron sinks in the $500.00 range (US Dollars), from Barklay.   If was going to splurge? I would definitely choose a copper apron sink from Native Trails.

Does anyone recall exactly when Apron sinks  first came into being? I am almost positive my Great Grandmother had one.   (It is often said in fashion, hold on to something long enough and it will  eventually be back in sytle.)  Thank you for the shopping tip.

Love them...had no idea that Ikea sells them.  I never realized just how expensive they can be.

Okay, now how did you get the IKEA Domsjo for $249? It was $299 when I bought mine in September.

I too purchased the DOMSJO apron sink from Ikea this year.  I was very disappointed with it though because after 2 days of use there were all sorts of grey scratches from cutlery all over the sink and it only go worse over time.  Also, my husband left a cookie sheet in the sink for several hours and it stained the sink permanently.  When we were renovating our kitchen we used the bathroom sink to do dishes for 2 months and the bathroom sink was not damaged at all from cutlery.  Just a warning to those of you thinking of purchasing the sink!

lois- I found a company called Lavello out of the states that has lovely stainless steel apronfront sinks at very reasonable prices (under US$800 for a 36-inch double bowl- only US$65 to ship to Canada). the reviews look good.
