Photo Challenge: Tackling Your Boring Walls

Writers fear the blank page; artists hesitate with a blank canvas; and many of us fear a big, blank, white wall in our homes. The possibilities are endless and the results can be amazing or a complete fail. Personally, the fear of failure is the reason most of my walls remain empty and boring. For years I’ve been collecting cute prints, artwork, greeting cards, pictures and more with the intention to frame and display them. And still, my walls remain more or less bare and sad.

So for this month’s Challenge, we want you to tackle those boring walls! Show us your fantastic art, pictures or whatever displayed proudly in your home. Please, I need all the help and inspiration I can get!

Clockwise from the left: Apartment Therapy, Poppytalk, Domino Magazine

Here’s how to participate in our Photo Challenge:

  • If you’ve got a great display you want to show off, take a picture and send it in. If you’re embarking on the Challenge this month, send us before and after shots
  • Email your picture(s) to stylesheet AT hgtv DOT ca with a short description by November 30, 2008
  • Alternatively, if you’ve got a flickr account, you can post your picture(s) and description directly to our Style Sheet photo group

Love the purple wall...however wouldn't be ready to commit the other rooms in the house to be as dramatic...how would  I tie it in, and what colors mainly set it off.  I know white is obvious.  Trim and ceiling should be white?  What color should a connecting room be?  Any ideas?

Love the purple wall too!  For Kay -- I'm not a huge fan of white with accent walls. I think a great color with that purple would be a silverly blue, or a nice cream with a touch of yellow, or even a fun and creamy green would be great.   I think that same silvery blue would be great for a ceiling. Connecting room, if i was chosing the color, would be the color from the unaccented wall, but add some accents in that room from the accent purple.  Maybe even a purple chandelier or light fixture.  Something fun!

Hello HGTV,

I wonder if Canada can create an Extreme Makeover Home Edition. I would love to create this. Anyone have any ideas how to begin? Canadian Families need help.

I think the home extreme renovation show for Canada is a great idea however the concept should be the renovations and at a BUDGET not to totally destroy the existing house and build a new one that is totally over the top and not something that also costs and arm, leg and alot more...that only the rich can afford...I loved the US show at first but now I don't even watch it as they just destroy the houses totally instead of renovating and build a new one that granted is usually grand but not at all what people can afford, especially with the recession, (have you tried to explain to your kids why they can't have the over the top kids room that they get in that show?  I have 4 kids and sure they would love the size and designs that are shown but I don't have money for that!)

Also they never show taking the useable items from the previous house and bringing them to the Humanity Re-store or somewhere else to be recycled.  So I agree that we should have our own version of the show but Canadians are not Americans so let's have the show more realistic and something that the average working Canadian can watch and maybe do with their house and not the OVER THE TOP demolition and building of a new house.
