Question of the Week: TV in the Bedroom - Yay or Nay?

I admit it. I have a TV in my bedroom. Some people think it’s gross and are categorically against it, but I absolutely love it. Is it the mark of a sloth? Perhaps.  Does it mean that I never read? Not at all, in fact I am an avid reader.

Aside from the implications of laziness, what is really all that wrong with having a TV in your bedroom? We live in Canada, where the winters are long, dark and grey, and having a TV in my bedroom means cozy cocooning when the weather is just too atrocious to brave.  I also enjoy cuddling while watching Saturday morning cartoons with my daughter, and if I’m home alone, the comforting flicker of the old tube keeps my mind off weird noses if I’m having trouble sleeping.

So I say OK to the TV in the bedroom, how about you?

Comments:

I too, have a TV in my bedroom, as I have tintinitis in my ear and I need to have background noise at all times, and as well it makes me sleepy and I can cuddle up and drift up, of course my timer is on.

I'm with you! I love snuggling up underneath the covers in the evenings watching tv. I save the early mornings for reading in bed.

I actually don't do the TV in the bedroom... I don't watch that much TV as it is, so it's just never come up.

If you lack imagination and need a TV in your bedroom, too bad for you. Candles are much nicer....

I would have to say no to TV in the bedroom. Your bedroom is supposed to be a place to relax your mind and body, and for intimacy; but, everyone has thier own opinion. I have a TV in my room, but it just sits there as a decoration collecting dust, honestly. Believe me or not, that's up to you...

Life would be incomplete without the bedroom TV.  I can't get ready in the morning without updates on the weather, traffic, and stupid idle banter from the morning show hosts.  In response to Nikki's comment about the bedroom being a place to relax mind and body, I have to say that I find nothing more relaxing than coming out of the shower and chilling on the bed, and watch a bit of tv, but that's just me.  I guess everyone has their own idea of relaxing.

As for intimacy, well, you can have your cake and eat it too.  Just because there is a TV in the bedroom, doesn't mean it's on 24/7.  I think it's no different than having a source of music in your room or a clock for that matter.

To each their own.

There's no other way!  Without a TV in my bedroom, I'd never fall asleep!  Thank goodness for the tube!!

My girlfriend and I DO NOT have one right now; she is anti vs. me being pro, and alas, it's her place, so she has some final say (LOL)... never the less, since we continue to fall asleep on our couch wathcing TV, my guess is come the holiday season, I might be able to sway her... my problem then is - what do we get... and how BIG do we go?

October 7, 2008 10:29 AM

I have one and we close it when we don't want to watch it. It's great for morning news or late movies. I'd love to replace it by a flat screen though. To each their own as Bonni says :)

October 7, 2008 10:53 AM

If it weren't for the TV in the bedroom, I would never watch TV.  I think it's very relaxing to fall asleep to the sounds and lights of the TV.

October 7, 2008 10:53 AM

I personally cant sleep with a Television on, however I do have a rolling TV stand where I can bring my TV into the bedroom whenever i want.  Its perfect for when you are sick, when you are tired, when your body needs rest, when you feel like being a sloth and ordering Sushi and eating it in bed alongside your duvet, or if you need to watch Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette to put you to sleep.  How does it differ from having a laptop in bed? I suppose if you're actually doing work its not the same, but if you are watching MADTV youtube forwards from your friends, its not.

TV in Bedroom a -OK.

(side note) my therapist says bed is only for sleep and sex, even reading is discouraged in bed.

I would never watch TV if it weren't in my bedroom, yet i need to fall asleep to the TV on. I think it's very relaxing to have on while you lay in bed. Does it mean i read less..yes probably.

TV in the bedroom would make me stay in my room for hours making me more anti social than I already am with the fam. TV in the bedroom would also cause me to stay up for hours on end watching my favorite shows making it even more difficult for me to wake up in the morning!

Well, we do have a TV in the bedroom. Watch it about as much as we watch the other TV downstairs - which is rarely. Nice to have for those late night re-runs of Law and Order or Sopranos. Doesn't really matter though as I usually fall asleep before any of the shows end. Doesn't have any effect on how much I read, I fall asleep even faster with a book...Nice to have as an option, not really necessary to me though.

I have a TV in the bedroom. It is rarely used when my girlfriend is home. We tend to stick to the rule of the therapist in the post a little higher up. She travels overseas quite a bit and when she's away the dog hops up on the bed with me and we fall asleep to the lullaby of sitcom reruns.

If I didn't have a TV in the bedroom, when my girlfriend was away, I would probably bring my laptop into bed with me and watch DVDs every night until she returned.

I enjoy falling asleep to the television, and as long as it doesn't take over your bedroom tactics it shouldn't be a problem to have it there.

October 7, 2008 6:47 PM

I need to have a t.v in my bedroom to fall asleep. I also enjoy waking up and watching t.v in my bed in the morning its very relaxing and wakes me up

October 7, 2008 6:48 PM

I dont think it is a good idea because it makes me to procrastinate and I go to bed really late due to the fact that I cannot simply start watching a television show and fall asleep, i have to watch the entire show.

i really enjoyed this discussion!!!

What a wonderful idea!!!

I'm getting one as soon as possible,,,,,,,,,,

We put a TV in the bedroom when we moved to our new place.  I didn't think I would like it, but I enjoy having it on in the morning when I get ready for work. I also really appreciate the extra ten minutes of shut-eye that we can squeeze out in the morning when the kids are cuddling with us and watching Toopy and Binoo. For the sleep-deprived, that's gold. I'm converted.

No.

I don't believe TV in the bedroom is a good idea. A bedroom should be a place where you can go to escape stress and the pressures of the outside world. TV provides this escape but in a negative form.  TV should not be placed in the bedroom due to the fact that a bedroom should be a peaceful and relaxing environment.

TV in a bedroom? I think it’s a unconscious form of distraction…from sleep, from real intimacy (if you share a bedroom with your mate, and from your conscious (having troubles keeping your thoughts “rush hour traffic” is a sign to have a little rendezvous with your own self;-)

But I do have TV in my bedroom even though don’t use it (except to check the weather in the morning).. Just in case, its there. Its all about having choices, no? :-)

October 7, 2008 11:06 PM

I like to have the TV in the bedroom for movies only. I can't fall asleep with the TV on because it gives me a headache with all the blinking lights. My husband prefers to fall asleep watching it, but on his couch in the living room and not in the bed.  We have just moved to a smaller home and instead of putting the tv in the bedroom we've created a TV room out of the smallest bedroom and have placed his couch in there as well. Now, if he so desires, he can watch it and go to sleep when he wants to.  But as many of you said, if both partners don't enjoy the TV in the bedroom as much as the other, the intimacy is taken from the bedroom no matter how you look at it.  :(

Not only do I have a TV in my bedroom, but I have one in almost every room in my house!

October 8, 2008 3:18 PM

Id never have thought of a TV in a bedroom but on Home Heist the other evening they did an AWESOME bedroom TV armoir with teh TV hidden behind doors and I see they did a few options for secret ways of having a TV in their book.  Great ideas Id never seen like a tilt and turn one and another that pops in and out! Genius!

Hope alls well with everyone else,

There's life beyond the TV! I definitely am against the tube in the bedroom.  As someone else mentioned, it allows you to procrastinate by taking up your time.  (how can you possibly wake up refreshed and on time when you spent the night before watching sitcoms or the food channel or another movie?)   I think bedrooms are for intimate times and relaxation from the noisy world around us.  To each his own....not my cup of tea (tea-vee? ;))

T.V's were at one time in the Rec Room, then the Family Rm, then never was it thought of to be in the Living Rm, as this Living Rm was a look but don't touch area, ....... Well times have changed and somethings are still a " I can't believe It" ... If T.V's  are the Oh my..... Then whats next ..... the bathroom. Well then I guess the bedroom isn't such a bad thing...... If anyone isn't  happy about a T.V. in the bedroom,   then that's your choice and  ones area of control. ..... But I would draw the line on .... The Bathroom.

I don't agree with tele's being in a bedroom. Thats what a wreck room or living room is for.

Though I do I a tele in my room right now because I's back at my parents house where there is a tele in the Living room and both mine and my brothers room. So it's understandable, I guess. (I'm 21)

Small house. So our rooms are all multi-function.

But for future. A tele in the master bedroom would be a no-no. Guess I'll save this argument for me & my future husband. Besides.. the only channel I ever watch is HGTV, Lol. Which I mostly do on the net.
