Fall is by far my favourite season.  The cooler weather, rich colours adorning the trees and the abundance of the harvest combine to inspire me to either pick up a paintbrush or start preparing the house for festive gatherings.  It was the latter that hit me this weekend, so I popped into my local florist in search of a hit of autumnal colour to spruce up my dining room table.

When choosing flowers in the fall, I prefer to go with colours that mimic the trees outside: deep burgundies, punchy oranges, bright yellows, and a sometimes a hit of white for balance.  Large bunches of daisies are widely available this time of year and you can usually pick up a bunch for under $10.

Although I do love a high and bountiful flower arrangement now and then, I tend to stick to lower arrangements for ease of arrangement and flexibility.  With my latest floral finds I took three white pots and separated out the flowers into like colours putting each grouping in their own pot.  Together they make for great impact on a dining room table, but they also provide an equal amount of impact on their own in various locations throughout the house. If you don’t have three pots of the same size, sticking flowers in a few glasses - they can be just as pretty.

If putting together a flower arrangement isn’t in your schedule, try picking up some small pumpkins and gourds to add a seasonal touch to your décor.  Pumpkins simply lined up on an old piece of barn board or table runner are a great way to add punch to the table.  Or, toss the gourds and pumpkins into an old straw hat or wood box to make for a quick centrepiece.

Whether you use petals or pumpkins, take advantage of the season’s colours to help usher in the festive feeling of fall.
