With the advent of the internet and web sites like eBay and Craigslist, collecting collectables has become a lucrative business and a passionate hobby for insatiable collectors. Prior to the internet age, collectables were definitely more challenging to acquire and subcultures formed and existed for the sole purpose of selling, trading, and purchasing rare and collectable items.
Back in the day, some of the collectables that I remember my friends’ parents collecting include: spoons, pop bottles, thimbles, hand painted vases, porcelain dolls, china, and Swarovski crystal animals, just to name a few. Today, anything and everything is collectable from fridge magnets, patterned plates and egg cups to sneakers, toys, and designer furnishings.

"I love to collect patterned plates and I gravitate towards funky and unique patterns. I keep them in a special place near the front of my cupboard for a blast of color and pattern when I open my cupboard doors."--Jessica

"Colossus is one of my favorite super heroes and I collect anything and everything of this character. I used my largest bust as the focal point and built my display around this centrepiece."--Terry

"I can’t get enough of all shoes but particularly vintage shoes because I know the style, craft and general aesthetics will never be recreated again. To me they’re perfect little time capsules of the decades. Also, by saying I’m “collecting” them, it gives me a reason to buy shoes just because I love them, even if they don’t fit, or I don’t have the guts to actually put them on. I keep my shoes in a reclaimed, painted kitchen sideboard in the guest room."--Elana

"As a former beauty editor, I've acquired quite the perfume collection and I'll admit that I don't even wear most of these scents but I love the bottles. A few of the smaller flacons are vintage hand-me-downs from my grandmother." --Vanessa
Finding a treasure is only part of the fun in collecting, the true reward for any collector is derived from displaying their collection and admiring the fruits of their collecting efforts. China hutches, glass display cases, table tops, book shelves, tops of dressers, and wall fixtures are merely a few of the ways in which collections may be displayed in a home.
