Question of the Week: What Do You Collect?

With the advent of the internet and web sites like eBay and Craigslist, collecting collectables has become a lucrative business and a passionate hobby for insatiable collectors. Prior to the internet age, collectables were definitely more challenging to acquire and subcultures formed and existed for the sole purpose of selling, trading, and purchasing rare and collectable items.

Back in the day, some of the collectables that I remember my friends’ parents collecting include: spoons, pop bottles, thimbles, hand painted vases, porcelain dolls, china, and Swarovski crystal animals, just to name a few. Today, anything and everything is collectable from fridge magnets, patterned plates and egg cups to sneakers, toys, and designer furnishings.

"I love to collect patterned plates and I gravitate towards funky and unique patterns. I keep them in a special place near the front of my cupboard for a blast of color and pattern when I open my cupboard doors."--Jessica

"Colossus is one of my favorite super heroes and I collect anything and everything of this character. I used my largest bust as the focal point and built my display around this centrepiece."--Terry

"I can’t get enough of all shoes but particularly vintage shoes because I know the style, craft and general aesthetics will never be recreated again. To me they’re perfect little time capsules of the decades. Also, by saying I’m “collecting” them, it gives me a reason to buy shoes just because I love them, even if they don’t fit, or I don’t have the guts to actually put them on. I keep my shoes in a reclaimed, painted kitchen sideboard in the guest room."--Elana

"As a former beauty editor, I've acquired quite the perfume collection and I'll admit that I don't even wear most of these scents but I love the bottles. A few of the smaller flacons are vintage hand-me-downs from my grandmother." --Vanessa

Finding a treasure is only part of the fun in collecting, the true reward for any collector is derived from displaying their collection and admiring the fruits of their collecting efforts. China hutches, glass display cases, table tops, book shelves, tops of dressers, and wall fixtures are merely a few of the ways in which collections may be displayed in a home.

What collectables do you collect and how do you display them? Leave a comment and let us know or show us your display by posting a picture to our flickr Style Sheet photo group!

Comments:

I used to collect Polar Bear art - prints, paintings, statues, etc.  they're displayed all over the house.  Because I have run out of walls - I haven't bought any other pieces.  Now - I donate money to the Canadian Wildlife Fund in support of protecting them!!

Aside from dust bunnies and dirty laundry I collect elephants.I love them!  My problem is that I'm a want-to-be minimalist and I'm not sure how to display them without looking like a crazy "elephant" lady.  Right now aside from one or two displayed on my mantle... the rest are packed away :(

I have collected thimbles from all over the world; now that I am moving on (out) I am not sure what to do with them. I also have a small collection of dolls, most of which I will keep and take with me. I really am trying to learn how to live with less clutter - so very difficult when your passion is needlework of any kind!

September 17, 2008 8:36 AM

I too collect thimbles and have three cases that hold 100 each which hang on the wall. As I pruchased these from Regal gifts I hope I can get another when the last one is full.

I also collect teddy bears and they are everywhere in the house. I keep saying no more but there is always one that is "soooo cute"

I have a variety of things that I display around our home, for example small pictures of flowers, very nice ornaments on my coffee table, and Bradford Exchange plates on the walls. I find that this gives our home a nice display of things.

September 17, 2008 8:45 AM

I collect thimbles from all over the world and have them in the same cases as Heather.  I also purchased them from Regal but they don't make them any more, so will have to put on my thinking cap.  Any suggestions out there?

I collect anything hummingbird. Pictures on the wall in my "Hummingbird Hallway." I also have plates, figurines, writing paper you name it. I also have hummingbird flags and wall plaques outside and of course hummingbird feeders. I can never have enough of anything with a hummingbird theme and am always looking when I shop.

September 17, 2008 9:57 AM

I collect cottages from Britain - some Lilliput Lane and a few others as well. They are all on 2 shelves of my baking rack, in the kitchen. I also have an old framed print of a cottage that sits behind them.

September 17, 2008 10:13 AM

My "hope chest " started back in 1968 with a set of stirling silver teaspoons from my Nana. 40 years later I still prefer to buy silver, crystal and fine china over shoes and clothes.  Although the chest has long since been emptied, I still have that set of spoons and use them often. Storage is becoming a problem now and so most cannot be displayed and sits in the cupboards although I try and use them as much as possible when entertaining. My new collection is teapots-mostly from the Orient--that my boys are always finding for me in their travels. I am able to display them more easily as most of them are quite small.

September 17, 2008 11:12 AM

I collect cast iron pots and pans that I display in my kitchen and mud room. Some hang from hooks. I use most of them. Some are quite old. My favourite is a boot bug that is fastened to the floor in the mudrrom and is very useful for removing boots.

September 17, 2008 11:37 AM

I collect china, figurines, unique items, that I can find at garage sales or thrift stores. I have a beautiful big display cabinet in my dining room, a curio cabinet in my living room and shelves in my kitchen for display.

I'm a china junkie, I have a large collection of books too, on collectables so I know what things are worth; when I find a bargain. Some I resell after I've enjoyed them for a while.

September 17, 2008 12:15 PM

I collect so many things and they are everywhere in our home. Hummingbirds, duck decoys, polar bears, teddy bears, vases, books, etc., etc. and we enjoy them all!!

September 17, 2008 1:09 PM

Hi. I collect flower pockets. Those annoying little animal shaped vases that people still send flowers and plants in to new mothers!

Mine are wonderful. I have about one hundred and twenty of them. Some hang on the wall the rest are corralled into two very simple hanging cabinets on each side of my kitchen window. The colors are amazing and they all tell stories of what happened at that period of  time and the type of artistry in days long gone. They are from different countries and I have everything from cute cats and dogs, to glamourous horses, cars, houses, amphibians and the most amazingly colored birds. I would be happy to send a picture for your interest. Thanx

I collect antique plates.  They are the type usually with gold around the edges and are made in England.  I have them standing on top of my kitchen cupboards on small plate easels.  They are all so different and i can't get enough of them.

September 17, 2008 3:26 PM

I collected Royal Daulton figurines and keep the few that I have in my curio so that I don't need to dust them often.

September 17, 2008 4:00 PM

I love tea cups and saucers.  My grandmother always drank out of a special tea cup which I am pleased to say I inherited.  Tea just tastes better in a fancy china cup!

September 17, 2008 4:01 PM

I have two very old collector plates that belonged to my grandmother and my husband had them framed with wood and covered in glass and I have them on my living room wall where they are well protected as I would not like anything to happen to them

September 17, 2008 6:05 PM

I have a small collection of horse brasses - atpresent they are displayed in a shadow box - I would be interested in hearing other suggestions.

September 17, 2008 7:15 PM

I collect crystal and porcelain bells.  Like the kind to call me to dinner!!

I'm always looking for more interesting ones.  Any suggestions?

September 17, 2008 9:22 PM

I collect greeting cards.  It started forty years ago when I put all my

wedding cards in a scrap book to keep.  From there it went to birthday

and other cards.  I have swarorski crystal collection which I keep in a

glass and mirrored container.

September 17, 2008 11:19 PM

I collect Winnie the Pooh stuff - plates and figurines.  I have a spare room where I display most of the stuff.   But I do have one small item in every room.

September 18, 2008 12:35 AM

Love your website! Let's see...I collect Holly Hobbie things, Snoopy, Expo 67,  The Beatles and anything John&Yoko, Marilyn Monroe, small cut-glass creamers, white china with  purple flowers, McCoy pottery, Fiesta, Shawnee vases,  canadian art--i have a beautiful Corbett Gray sketch from 1975!, little Beatrix Potter books, Anything 70's and appropriately tacky to complement my orange and brown kitchen! Blue and White Delfts' china from Holland, Wade animal figurines from the old red rose tea boxes...whew! no wonder my house is upside down. Cheers!

September 18, 2008 1:37 AM

I used to collect Owls until I ran out of room. I got rid of all of them except one.   I now collect birdhouses, some of which I let the birds use outside.  I have special birdhouses on a few shelves in my familyroom.  I now only buy birdhouses that can actually be used and they go outside.

September 18, 2008 4:50 PM

I collect miniatures which I then put into a restored wood printer's tray. It hangs on the wall. My miniatures include little trays of sushi, Raggedy Andy, water pitchers made of glass, real pottery plates and bowls, bird feeders/houses, etc. Every miniature is approximately the size of the end of my thumb

September 18, 2008 5:54 PM

I collect Angels-and Bears.  Because my apartment is so small  I only have some of my angels out at present.

September 18, 2008 9:56 PM

I collect anything mythological/historical.archeological, in particular dragons, and mystery, herbal, bead crafting, mythology and historical books.  But I am picky about what I want and only have maybe only 10 dragons, but I have never seen any one with similar ones.  They are displayed in various parts of the house.  My mythologic stuff (green man, Quan yin, Isis, Scarab and more) are also placed throughout the house as these items vary from plates to plaques to figurines.  I find that if I am particular, I can always find space for one more, and as these items are rarer to find, it does not take much to find a spot right now.  That may change, of course.  I have lots of books as well, and what isn't on one of my 5 book shelves is in storage, but I change them out quite a bit, and go through them and get rid of what I no longer want.  My jewellry collection is currently kept in an antique wash stand that has a small drawer and cupboard, plus two jewellry boxes, one of them yin/yang shaped (a combination of collections!)

September 19, 2008 12:32 PM

My 10 year old has always been fasinated in old keys. He has several dating back to the early 1900's. Most are skeleton house keys and some are for original safe/money boxes.

I like frogs. Glass, wood carved, stuffed. They're supposed to be good luck.

September 19, 2008 3:40 PM

I love collecting pug figurines, paintings, cushions, etc...  I also collect anything to do with the beauty industry including old perfume bottles, cosmetics (I don't use them!).  I only wish I could afford something from the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who were great pug lovers.

September 19, 2008 10:34 PM

I have a collection of dolls but have had to stop buying them as I have run out of room for them, so I do have to rotate them in my cabinet. I also collect angels which I have out at Christmas time. At that time I put away a lot of my other dolls and desplay the angels instead. I also have collected a lot of different Christmas ornaments some of them I have made.

September 20, 2008 11:31 AM

Greetings..I collect enamelware...the kind that is white with brightly coloured flowers, animals,  or scenery.  It is made in China and it almost looks like china!  Just love the graphics and it is so bright and colourful.  I find most at auctions.  I have about 32 pieces...plates, trays, cups, basins and different sized dishes.

September 20, 2008 4:55 PM

I collect avon dishes from the 1970's, the cape cod collection. My grandmother gave me a few years back, and I always have to have more.

September 21, 2008 11:08 PM

I adore anything and everything 'nautical' but my primary collectibles are lighthouses.  We're just back from a trip to southern Maine - you might guess I came home with a few more ornaments and a deep longing to return!

September 22, 2008 9:27 AM

I collect a few things but what I really want is my mom's collection of 1970's plastic figurines that were used to garnish drinks!  She has mermaids, monkeys, giraffes etc.  Does anyone else remember these things?  I couldn't wait for my parents to come home with them for me to play with, and they didn't mind the drinkin'g part either.

September 22, 2008 12:18 PM

I collect mid-century vintage cookware and serving pieces, like pyrex 'Primary Colours' bowls, and strainers, sieves, etcetera. They are displayed on a refinished  Knechtel "Hoosier' style cabinet, but every piece has to be easily accessible, because I use them all, whenever I cook!

September 23, 2008 8:00 AM

I started collecting bookmarks after I found one in an old book of poetry. It is a due date reminder from some library called "The Providence Athenaeum" and is stamped Dec 14, 1921. Since then, I have collected hundreds which come in every conceivable design. Friends are happy to bring them back for me from their travels - they're inexpensive and immensely portable.

September 24, 2008 10:31 PM

I have an insatiable appetite for reading.  From the ages of five to about fifteen or sixteen, I voraciously collected comic books.  The combination of money, teen angst and the social pressure to "grow up" culminated in my comic book-collecting retirement.  The aesthetic attraction that initially intrigued me remained, however and this fascination with the printed visual resurfaced in my adult years and morphed into a rather esoteric interest.  The artwork and design of used books, particularly those in other languages, dominates my walls, bookshelves and coffee tables.  I live in New York City, a city whose streets are flooded with used books for sale.  In this day of links, messages, graphics and instantaneous global communication, I can't get enough of cover art and design.

October 2, 2008 11:48 AM

I guess mine would have to be pictures - different types. My sister tells me that my lower level looks like an art gallery. The second level looks like I live in a loft. I live in a 101 year old Townhouse. Just love it!

October 15, 2008 8:01 AM

I collect tea cups and saucers(started when married '67/gifts), china plates(have my grammas 100 yr old 4 plates).

Also love frogs(mostly the cute posed ones, about 3or4 inches, but have other types.

Have pelican / heron pics and ornaments, and seem to be aquiring more birds which is great... makes home a warm and loving place to be!

November 5, 2008 12:06 PM

I collect Avon Victorian Perfume Ladies and "Belles of the World" if anyone has any.
