Question of the Week: Is It Ever Okay to… Fake It?

By "faking it" of course we mean synthetic flowers! Almost everyone can agree that potted plants and fresh cut flowers are some of the simplest ways to brighten any room. For those who lack a gardener's green thumb, this can pose a bit of a problem with multiple trips to the flower market straining on the wallet. It's not surprising that many people have opted to go synthetic. Fake flowers have long been branded the ultimate design no-no, however, bogus blooms have come a long way in recent years with many looking as real as their organic cousins.

Fake flowers = blech!

However, the paper "flowers" I like because they're obviously not flowers... Then it's cute and not trying to be real.

I think that fake flowers can be beautiful, but I would never settle for a cheap fake because I can't get my hands on the real thing.  Fakes should only be displayed if they are moving themselves (like the paper above) not as a replacement.  And fake flowers should NEVER be permanent.  Just because they last forever doesn't mean they should!

Fake flowers have there place, but should not be cheap imitations.  If you have to go fake either pick something that is whimscal like the roses above or silk flowers.  I always try to go with real flowers.  If I use fake flowers they must be cleaned regularly other wise they show the dust.  I live in an area that is always dusty so real work better for me.

I do prefer to have the REAL flowers but you have to admitt there are some really nice fake ones out there now adays.  I have some fake ones and love them but ya gotta keep them dusted and in a spot where they are not going to fade!

Fake flowers are the ultimate no-no in my decor.  I lived in an 80s styled house for far too long with a multitude of silk plants.  Even though fake florals have come a long way since then, they aren't fooling anyone.  So if you want to add a little life to your space, but don't have a green-thumb, try bamboo, it lasts forever (well, a couple months at least).

Being a florist; of course I am going to say, "Real Flowers", but today there are so many silks that look very realistic.  This is a good way to go for those who have no time on their hands and want the look of colour in their homes for decor.  Please though remember to get ones that make people take a second look and keep them clean or your sins will find you out.

Silk flowers work for me since my husband has severe allergies and we own a cat who considers real flowers appetizers.

I agree!!!

& if you do use fake flowers and they get blech over time.. throw em out and replace with a new bunch of a different colour to freshin things up a bit.

My moms friends have had the same fake flowers for 1 too many years.

I enjoy caring for real flowers just as much as I enjoy caring for fish.

Fresh cut flowers from the garden in small groupins look the best!!

I would love to have 'real' flowers and plants throughout my house, but unfortunately I love my two cats more who also have a love for the 'real thing' so it's the fake stuff for me - oh well I don't have to water them !

Its ok to fake it.  as long as you keep them dust free. but not the ones you can spot far away. you can always add a fragance in the roon to make a point.
