Patio Tour: Take It Outside

Take It Outside's outdoor-savvy designer, Kelly Deck transformed a basic balcony into a mod outdoor living room, complete with a wall-mounted flat-screen television (which is really only advisable if you have a covered deck, like this one), for sports fans, Carolyn and Steve.

Take It Outside

The plastic roof panels and decaying furniture that were features of the original drab deck were replaced with insulating acrylic panels, fab retro-inspired pieces and a whole lot more decor. The mod throw pillows are made with outdoor fabric and the large circular globe light can stay outside all year long. The pièce de résistance of course, is the floor-to-ceiling canvas painted with a graphic '60s print.

To download floorplans like the one above, and see more of Kelly's great outdoor makeovers, visit the Take It Outside gallery.

For something that focuses a little more on the foliage, take a look at the Dirty Business gallery, which features photos from the show and detailed garden plans complete with plant names and locations.

Just got through watching a program called "Relocation Relocation. One of the hosts of the show is Kirstie Allsopp. Is she a sister, or some relation to Sophie Allsopp who also appears on a similar program selling houses in Canada?

We just bought some teak out door furniture, and I was wondering what colour and type of outdoor cushions should I get for the chairs.  I would like to give a modern look, but not too cold as the patio is cement slabs. Where could I purchase the cushions for a reasonable price?

Hi Bonnie,

Take a look at the Take It Outside gallery (link above) for cushion colour inspiration. Kelly Deck used dark wood in episode 1 and used dark wicker in episode 5. She's accented the dark furniture with bright orange, coral and red fabric.

Kelly usually uses outdoor fabric, so click on the link for "View Shopping Guide" to see where she bought the fabric and furniture for each episode.

I absolutely love Kelly's design style! I think she always comes up with great ideas and honours the clients style and taste. I especially love the large painted canvas against the wall. I've wanted to do this in my outdoor space for some time....I'n not sure however how to protect it from the elements. I live in New Brunswick and would be bringing it inside for the winter months. I was wondering what type of paints to use and/or if it needs a protective coat of some kind. Thank you for sharing such beautiful spaces!
