New Summer Shows on HGTV

I checked out HGTV's new summer shows for design inspiration and decorating ideas.

Dirty Business takes us behind the scenes of a landscape design firm. Each episode chronicles the entire process of a landscaping project — from the analysis of the space to be landscaped, the thoughts of the homeowner and the landscaping plan of attack to the final execution. Each week the hosts provide tips and tricks that are easy to follow so you can reinvent your own outdoor space. Valuable information is found in a variety of plant and shrubbery recommendations, landscaping details, outdoor space optimization and the final critique of the reveal. Dirty Business inspired me to give some thought to the landscape of my backyard after seeing what can be achieved with the proper placement of outdoor furnishings and greenery. Visit the Dirty Business show page for more information.

The Stagers gives us an insider view of leading Canadian staging company Dekora. Looks are everything and the stagers add a touch of design and style, transforming sale properties from plain and boring into luxurious living spaces worthy of bidding wars. I found this show beneficial for the design tips, the tricks of the staging trade, and the pure entertainment value of watching the stagers hectically scramble to stage properties in a short amount of time. Visit The Stagers show page for more information.

The Fix is the home renovation version of Candid Camera, as unsuspecting homeowners anticipate the home makeover of their dreams, but wake up to the reno of their worst nightmare. After the disapointment of the homeowners has been captured, the show's hosts reveal that they have been "fixed" (similar to being punk'd) and that the hosts will redeem themselves by fulfilling the original dream renovation. It is all in good fun and the reactions of the hapless homeowners is priceless! It is interesting to see the two extremes — from how ridiculous the inital "fix" can be to the final beautiful dream reveal. Visit The Fix show page for more information.

The Property Shop chronicles the trials and tribulations involved in opening an independent real estate agency. Tatiana is a successful and ambitious real estate agent and she is determined to start her own agency so that she may have her piece of the real estate cake and eat it too. Relentless and ruthless at times, Tatiana knows her game and she is a real estate force to be reckoned with. I enjoyed watching Tatiana's feisty character as she helps homeowners improve the look of their properties and teaches them how to get the most for their home. Visit The Property Shop show page for more information.

Take It Outside returns! Host Kelly Deck continues to transform outdoor spaces into breath taking extensions of indoor spaces. It is all about taking the indoors outside. This is one of my favorite programs as it is always packed full of great tips and ideas and Kelly Deck is always an inspiration. Watch full episodes of Take It Outside.

While it’s always interesting to see new shows, I’m disappointed that Home and GARDEN Television still doesn’t have any real gardening shows. I’m not talking about landscaping, outdoor furniture, or pretentious place settings for the picnic table, but real gardening shows about dirt, trees, shrubs, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Sheesh, even old reruns of Canadian Gardener, Gardener’s Journal, and The Victory Garden would be a breath of fresh air amidst the plethora of programs dedicated to getting rid of a home at the best possible price.

Yes, I totally agree with Susan Bennett, gardening shows would be more interesting to watch then the property shows you have on now. They are all like the reality shows that are on every channel these day. I'm sure there are some gardening shows out there that you can find to bring to the interested viewers

It sure would be great if the landscaping shows would consider working outside the GTA. For example, we are 3.5 hours north of Toronto and have a real landscaping challenge with our new ICF house - it has been built into a granite ridge in a brand new upscale subdivision in North Bay.

If you are looking for a creative landscaping challenge, we have one here.

Thanks.

Re: "marriage under construction"...how did Gill go from being on "till debt do us part" to having her own TV show?

I have to say I'm disappointed with the fall 2008 line up.  Enough with the "flipping house-reality shows" concept.  Some varity would be great-"home to flip" is the same as "sarahs house, "property shop" is the same format as any other reality show from toronto.  I loved Holmes on Homes, but every 9pm time slot? is too much.  I miss Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp with there new shows.  New shows were advertised but then but on horrible time slots.

I would love to see more real "down in the dirt" gardening shows. Not shows about how to transform your patio or put in a retaining wall. I mean shows with real gardening information about how to grow and care for your plants. It would also be really nice to have them relevent to areas outside of the Toronto area. There is a whole other country out here and we have totally different climates and challenges than those in the southern Ontario area. Canadian Gardening and Victory Garden etc are gone and there is nothing so far that has replaced them.

I totally agree regarding the lack of gardening shows.  Especially in the winter when they would be most welcome to bridge the gap the the Spring.   It's been like this for too long, perhaps a change within HGTV, get some fresh thinking again!  Same - lame - o.  Enough, let's get some new gardening shows!  Either that or change the name of the network to HTV.  I mean who are we kidding here?

I have also been lamenting the lack of REAL gardening shows in the past two seasons. I don't want to see another show about some urbanites buying or selling their homes or redecorating a loft. I think that HGTV has forgotten about the G..and forgotten REAL gardeners. I rarely watch the channel anymore and it used to be my favourite one. Also, what's with the infomercials every weekend morning? it's when most working people would like to watch a REAL show....very bad timing

Candice Olsen has the best HGTV show running, her show is entertaining and inspirational, she uses quality products and she is the master of problem solving. The other decorater shows are less then good. They show cheap and uninteresting remodels. The close ups show all the horrible lack of experience in the details and the rush to get things done. Oh.................please bring us something new, upscale and exciting!!!!!!
