DIY: Chic Storage for Your Reusable Bags

I’m a big fan of reusable grocery bags.  Not only are they more comfortable when it comes to carting around your groceries, but by using them you are also doing your part to keep plastic bags out of landfills.  Although I make every effort to try and remember my bags when I head to the store, I admit that on occasion I forget them because they are hiding in my pantry.

I’ve taken to leaving the bags hanging off the back of my front door, but the rumpled and multi-coloured look of the reusable bags is not enhancing the decor of my living room! So, in an attempt to help me remember the bags when go shopping, and do away with the unsightly fabric hanging off the back of my door, I put together a bag holder using left over fabric from my living room pillows. It’s makes for an item that is both practical and stylish!

Required Materials:

• Two pieces of fabric 9”x 30” (left over fabric from other projects in your room is an excellent way to tie in the project to the rest of your décor)
• Thread
• Cording to close the bottom and make a tie at the top
• Any decorative material you wish
• Sewing Machine (this isn’t a must as you can put the project together the old fashioned way — by hand)
• Sense of humour — sewing can be tricky if it’s not something you do all the time.  Mistakes happen — just go with it!

Assembly:

1) With right sides facing each other sew up the long sides of the fabric leaving a ½ inch seam.

2) Next, fold over 2 inches of fabric at one end to create the bottom.  Sew around the fabric to create a tunnel leaving an opening for the cording to go through.

3) Next work the cording around the tunnel. Tighten the cord to make a smaller hole but make sure there is enough space for bags to come out the bottom. (Tip: Attach a safety pin to the cord to help work it around the tunnel). Tie off the cord and tuck any remaining cording into the tunnel.

4) Do the same to the other end, but this time leave enough cording hanging out to create a handle.

5) Flip inside out and fill with your reusable bags!

Nifty little project!

If you shortened it up and maybe added a sewn on handle it could also make a good little tote to take into the store (if you have that much shopping to do) instead of just storage at home.

I immediately move them back into my car...that way I have them when I make random or impulse stops.  They store nicely in the map pocket on the back of the car seat.

Nifty idea that could be a great stocking stuffer for Christmas or other special occassions for those who are craft like challenged. To bad you can't make one big enough for one's beverage of choice since they are taking away all the plastic bags.

Thanks for the idea!  I intend to make them and use them as Christmas bags and gift bags. Then all of my gift recipients will have one or two.  That way we call all stop buying wrapping paper and gift bags and hopefully all of my friends can make a GREEN difference.

I also return my usuable bags to the trunk of my car and always have them with me at all times.

Thanks again for the great idea.

I have been using cloth bags for a while now and I keep some in the closet and 2 large ones in the truck.  Better than having groceries fall out the bottom of the plastic bags all over the sidewalk.  When I forget the cloth bags, I have to remind them (the store) to double-bag.

I found a great little Reusable Shopping Bag that weighs just 1 oz and easily fits into your pocket or purse. Comes in its own little attached bag so it stays neat and tidy.
