Best Decorating Tip on a Budget

Decorating doesn't have to be expensive. All it takes is a creative mind.

This is a favourite project of mine from HGTV designer Lisa Santos – a $38 headboard. Yes you heard me correctly; a headboard for only $38. Simply adhere a wallpaper panel to the head of your bed then install decorative trim around the edges. Add a few extra pillows for decoration and comfort and you have a very stylish headboard on the cheap.

I would like to know if a back painted glass backsplash is a DIY project.  The local glass store has no info since they've not heard of this use of glass.

the idea is awesome but I wished the wallpaper is more flashy, the one lisa's using now is a bit dull- and the trim doesn't look exciting enough- need more piazzaz in it

Great idea!! ...however both the trim and wallpaper color don't match or contrast the rest of the room. A darker (or even white) color trim and a more interesting wallpaper would have looked much better.

I had a very difficult window ( vinyl - no drilling holes allowed ) that needed some privacy from the street outside in spite of both my husband and myself not wanting to cut off the wonderful light with conventional treatments. Solution : I purchased "see through" frames  ( ie 2 panes of glass and no backing) large enough to provide privacy. Between the glass I put a semi shear cloth on a lovely crinkled pattern and hung the frames in the windows with tension rods, curtain ring clips and small eyes screwed into the wooden frames. The result is inexpensive lovey stained glass look panels that provide privacy and allow all the light that we want.

Maybe not for $38.00 but another cheap Headboard for an Upholstered Contemporary look can be made out of individual, acoustic ceiling tiles.  1) Measure your required width. 2) Resize the tiles if necessary, scoring the tile with a 'carpet knife or box cutter' and give it a snap.  3)Cut a piece of quilt batting, l" larger (all sides) than the tile. Wrap  it around to the 'underside' and tack it with staples or fabric-glue.  Trim excess batting.  4)  With your chosen fabric follow the same steps for cutting and applying as you did with the batting. (Right side of fabric facing up.) Ensure  that you have nice clean/mitered corners, pulling it taught but not enough to squash the batting.   5) Using removable putty (for hanging pictures) apply it to the 'underside' of the tile and  adhere them to the wall in a block formation.  Voila, your done!  Have fun!

(Note:  The quilt batting  and fabric-glue can be found in almost any store that carries yard goods. Check out their reminent fabric bins for bargain prices.  Most Hardware stores carry the 'putty' and 'acoustic ceiling tiles'.

My husband wants to use a old interior door as a head board.  I think it will look great, and what a way to recycle.  Could probably get one at a garage sale or a recycle center.
