Saris, Turbans and Textiles

I just received a book called India Color: Spirit, Tradition and Style from Chronicle Books. And while it's not about home decor specifically, the vivid colours, patterns and textures captured in photographer Melba Levick's photos are totally inspiring.

India ColorFresh floral garlands, intricately woven rugs, sumptuous saris and multi-coloured turbans fill the book's pages and can easily be translated into rich, unexpected home accents.

• Magenta, royal blue, kelly green and bright yellow are key colours.

• Gold embroidery, mirrored embellishments and elaborate patterns are design elements to look out for in pillow, bedding or window textiles.

• Source interesting coloured-metal lanterns, ceramics or sculptures from local Indian markets and stores.

• Elephants, camels and horses are common motifs as are delicate and detailed florals and paisleys.

For more ideas on how to decorate with "India Color," see HGTV.ca's Sari-Style story with instructions on how to create wall tapestries, table runners, pillow cases and more out of beautiful silk saris.
