Question of the Week: What's Your Favourite Paint Colour?

Recently I painted my kitchen red; "California Poppy" (Behr.com, S-G-106), to be exact. It's bold, bright and I love it. Vibrant colours, whether their used on an accent wall or in the accessories, can add a much needed dramatic touch to a room.

Now I realize that dramatic reds aren't for everyone, so I recently polled the hgtv.ca editorial team of their top colour picks. Here's the round-up:

Pavilion Blue, Farrow & Ball
Pavilion Blue, Farrow & Ball
"It would make the perfect soothing colour for a bathroom or (if only!) a dressing room. It's pale and almost a neutral but the hint of blue gives it a spa-like quality." -- Vanessa

Sandstone Cliff, Behr
Sandstone Cliff, Behr
"The warm undertones make this a 'happy' gray, perfect for those looking for a neutral paint colour but don’t want the colour of the room to feel to cool. It's an excellent choice for rooms where you want to let your accessories pop!" -- Meagan

Borrowed Light, Farrow & Ball
Borrowed Light, Farrow & Ball
"Love this grayish-blue colour. Aside from being a perfect mix between two hot trendy colours (warm grey and robin's egg blue), it's a perfect colour match for pretty much any room in your house." -- Melissa

Bahaman Sea Blue, Benjamin Moore

"Blame my Pisces DNA, but this blue-green shade takes the cake. I would never paint an entire room in this colour, but I think one wall or an accent in turquoise is very modern and invigorating. It’s a happy medium between everyone’s safety colour, blue, and all that hunter green leftover from the 90s (horrors of all horrors!)." -- Nadine

Savonna Smile from Para Paints is a fun but subdued lime green. The perfect accent colour for almost any room!

I painted my living room a colour called Pumpkin Spice once. It looked ridiculously good in my downtrodden little rental. I'll never forget it.

I used a very pale yellow with white trim - very "homey" and I haven't gotten tired of it.

I love Pavilion Blue and Bahaman Blue... I guess I can go from one extreme to the next because I appreciate both colours.  Each has either a demur or bold aspect to it.

I have used Coastal Plain (Sherwin Williams) twice in our house, in my office and in our downstairs bathroom. It's such a soothing color and I think it's now being used in a few more homes of people who have seen ours!  :)

I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A NEUTRAL BEIGE TONE TO PAINT THROUGHOUT MY HOUSE, BUT I WANT IT TO FEEL WARM, NOT COOL.  ALL MY FURNITURE IS DARK ESPRESSO AND MY FLOORS ARE OAK, ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I found that trying to find a beige that didn't have pinky undertones frustrating and ended up using a neutral pale green.  My new favourite colour is Benjamin Moore HC-90 called Crown Point Sand. It's just a pale mossy green and it's such an easy colour to live with. (We also have dark furniture and oak floors and this colour makes it look so warm and inviting!

I am freshening up my main bathroom.  Would like to do it in white. Floors are a gray laminate and the tile around the tub has grey and beige tones to it.  Do not want to change the floors or tiles for now just clean and freshen it up and make it more spa looking.  What type of pictures and acessories could I put in a bathroom?

Susan,

My parents have old Pears soap ads in their bathroom. They're really charming and often in sort of sepia colour palettes, which would probably look really nice with your tiles and floor.

If you want a neutral that looks good with just about every colour, you can't beat Benjamin Moore Manchester Tan.  I love it.

Sandra:  I have used Muslin from the Benjamin Moore collection, in my main living space, it is one of those colors that adapts well with most colors.  Perhaps you could try a sample pot on your walls first.

To Bea Browne,

Try C2 paint colours for your Aubergine. The colour is "Wicked" if I recall correctly. A client of mine used it for a kitchen and it was amazing.

I absolutely LOVE "Slime Green" it's not the actual name of the colour, it's the nickname. If you cut open a fresh lime...the inside is the exact colour of my kitchen walls. In my last apartment it was my kitcehn & livingroom colour (looked fabulous with my navy couch and blue & white pottery & natural pine bookcases).

Now, in my home it's contained in my kitchen - my partner isn't as "daring" and put his foot down when I told him I'd like to splash more "Slime Green" in our new home.

The actual colour is "Sweat Pea" by BeautiTone paint at Home Hardware.

Bea Browne, there's a brand of paint called Citron available only online if you don't live in Tucson, AZ. Search their website("citron paint") and see if you like their Aubergine. You can get a sample to test first.

I like a color from Citron called Jasper. A very happy, strong yellow that I've used for my walk-in closet.

Love the Bahaman Sea Blue.  I also chose to paint only one wall in my guest bathroom a very similar color and leave the rest of the walls white

I want to paint our master bedroom with Beautitone paint in  a lavendar shade. Any suggestions with this as well as a color to go with it?
