The start of a new year means time to prognosticate what the design world will bring in 2013. Here are five things that are popping up on my radar.
1) A Lighter Shade of Pale

Warm apricots, pastel pinks, and dewy lavenders are making a big impact on interiors. Often paired with neutral shades of grey and white, the overall look is one of pale beauty. It’s a softer take on the trendy Scandinavian style which often combines white and black in stark contrast.
2) Embrace the Dark Side

If pale colours aren’t your favourite, head to the other end of the spectrum and embrace the dark side of interior decorating. Not since the 1980s have we seen homes dressed head to toe in inky, moody shades. If an entire house furbished in black is not for you, try one room like a powder room or den that could serve as a testing ground for your dark experiment.
3) Be Bold

The mantra for 2013 could be” go bold or go home”. Statement making tiles, light fixtures, wallpapers and rugs will be up front and present in the most stylish homes. Whether inspired by the runway (like the Missoni looking tile in the kitchen above) or riffing off of nature the most daring homeowners will not be afraid to make a strong, individual gesture.
4) A Touch of Copper

Last year we saw brass make a big comeback for lighting fixtures, faucets, hardware and decorative objects. Brass will continue to be a popular choice but we will also start seeing more of that other shiny flame coloured metal - copper. Its warm glow looks fresh and modern after years of chrome and brushed nickel.
5) Be Witty - Have Fun

Finally in 2013 it’s time to have fun with our spaces. Who says you have to use only one colour of tile on your floors? If a random orange tile makes you happy - go for it. Be witty and install that funhouse mirror in your bathroom with the asymmetrically painted chair. Your home will be a true testament to yourself and a personal portrait of your family.
Do you agree with the above? What do you predict will make it big this year?
