4 Ways to Decorate with Yellow

Posted by Iris Benaroia Wednesday, December 4, 2013 2:28 PM EST

Winter is coming. Maybe yellow can help. But yellow is tricky. Yellow makes some people cringe, and others overenthusiastic (think lemon-yellow dining rooms in the ’80s). But there is a right way to use yellow, and if you’re just waiting for someone to say the word, then read on!

Despite the colour’s challenging wrap, experts say yellow can significantly lift your mood, and even help with stimulating your intellect (apparently that’s why legal pads are yellow – who knew?)  So, strategy is key – follow these four examples of how to successfully lace a little sunshine throughout your decor, and you’ll be well prepared to meet winter on the level.

Be Unafraid: Key Furniture in Yellow

This vixen of a room (above) makes no bones about it: a yellow tufted sofa is the star; a yellow dresser in the supporting role; turquoise and hot pink accents as the colourful background cast. With a lovely trans-seasonal colour scheme, this room demonstrates how going with a sofa in a colour other than white or gray – just commit! -- can yield striking results.

Afraid? Accessorize Into It

Accessorizing with yellow doesn’t have to be a full-on commitment. Yellow flowers and lemons brighten up this apothecary style kitchen, and if you’re feeling daring, go to the next level with adding the glossy yellow steel stools.

Creative Freelance Professionals: Add Yellow to Your Home Office

If yellow really does help stimulate your intellect, as some of those legal pad folks claim, then find it a place in your creative sanctuary. The chevron drapes and seat cushion in this sophisticated home office makeover are a very stylish example of how yellow needn’t automatically beg for ‘country’, or white wainscoting.

Highlight Your Best Features

Not every home has the perfect architectural details to lend to this idea, but none the less, yellow can work as a literal highlighter to focus one’s attention. This window frame is genius, but think floating shelves, yellow accent ribbon on roman blinds, and even a yellow lamp shade.
