As the days grow shorter and the first autumn chill enters the air, people always ask the same question: What animal silhouette should I screen onto my pillow next year? Well, I’ve scoured design blogs and my inside sources* to bring you the hot home design trends for 2013! (*Note: I have no inside sources.)

Stately and Bold
This column has already covered the phenomenon of colour forecasting, but did you know there was such a thing as colour forecasting forecasting? Like baseball scouts looking to middle-schoolers for the next Cy Young winner, there are people out there using cryptic, ominous-sounding phrases like “olive becomes stronger” to guess what Pantone will guess will be the next hot colour. The verdict for 2013 seems to point towards classic, “old-world” colours like champagne, cobalt-blue and violet. On the other end of the spectrum, bold, preppy pinks and greens will be hot in edgier, more youthful spaces. Probably.

Art Deco
It comes back every few years and with good reason: Art Deco stuff looks awesome. Can you believe how much better everything and everyone looked back then? Yes we have Angry Birds and hot nacho cheese dispensers in corner stores but everything today looks like garbage compared to the 1920s. The upcoming Baz Luhrmann Great Gatsby film adaptation — so cool, its release date was delayed from 2012 to 2013! — should take this already simmering trend to a full boil. Look for rich gold and silver colours paired with exotic woods like zebrawood and ebony, along with textiles in bold geometric patters. Also look for “Flapper” to be a hit Halloween costume for cute girls for the 92nd consecutive year. Flapper is always a winner.

Horses and Wolves
Tired of “putting a bird on it”? Looking for a new animal to stencil on stuff? Let me ask you this: What eats birds? Cats? Oh, right. Uhhhh... something else. The Goliath bird-eating spider? Hmmm... I’ve never heard of that. Let me just Google OH DEAR GOD. No. Listen, nobody is stencilling giant, venomous tarantulas on things. I’ll give you one more guess. Other, larger birds? Come on! Wolves, you guys, wolves! Wolves eat birds. They are natural enemies, everyone knows that. And what do wolves eat? Horses. Wolves and horses will be the new hot animal motifs for 2013 and will inevitably serve as logos for hipster coffee shops. Also, my knowledge of the food chain is limited.

Chevrons
For years, a stretch of Highway 401 outside of Oshawa, ON, had chevrons painted on the asphalt, with signs instructing drivers to keep a distance of at least two-cars-length between each other. My friend and I would always laugh at this: Why chevrons? How many people were confused by the word “chevron” and thereby distracted from driving? Well, it turns out that those well-meaning highway engineers were ahead of their time: Those zig-zags are everywhere, from wallpaper to furniture coverings to clothing.
