I like the look of this house. Can't wait to see the makeover. Sarah never disappoints.

Beth H. says:

Oh my! I'm really looking forward to seeing what Sarah does for this house.

P Lanthier says:

She is my design hero. Her style is to die for. If only I could hire her to do . . . oh well.

I look at all the reruns and always find something missed the first or second time watching. But best of all is her heart. She has great one that could only define her style and who she is. Continued good luck. Oh, and congrat. on the new baby girl.

What town is the house? Whitby?

Judy Switzer says:

I have been watching Sarah since she started out and she has not only become a fantastic designer she has also become a wonderful young women and now a mother of two. Her parents should be very proud of her. I have seen this style of house. I love the chimney on the outside of the house. I also live in a backsplit but it's a semi and it will be quite interesting to see what Sarah does with this house. I learn a lot from her shows. She is a fantastic designer and her team of designers are also fantastic. This sad house will look amazing and come to life when Sarah finishes it. Looking forward to watching the show. All the Best and congrats on your new baby.

Guy says:

Looks like it may be a home in the Don Mills area in Toronto.
Whitby dosent have houses like this.
Its sad that most 50's mid century are now torn down to put McMansions up. If I was rich, Id by a McMansion, tear it down and put at 50/60's style home in.

RK says:

Love love love Sarah!!! I was hoping there'd be another season but wasn't sure with the market cooling a bit. I guess there isn't a new Design Inc because she was busy with this house (and pregnant with a new little one too!). I loved the last house, but I think this one represents a more close-to-home feel for most people.
And I have to agree that this house must be in Don Mills or nearby, as the price tag indicates it's still very much Toronto, and not that far into the burbs.

Too bad they have permanently cancelled Design Inc- it's very different from all of the other design shows out there.

I really enjoyed last season's 'House'....I'm looking forward to this new series.
I'm reading the 'comments' in which they say that there is no more 'Design Inc.' Is this true??? I love that show! I love Sarah's designs! I love the 'team'!
I'm in shock! Plse reconsider!!

Looked like a house in my area, Don Mills. I am disappointed that Design Inc. is cancelled, probably my favorite show. I continue to watch past episodes on HGTV on Demand.

Thursday, 02 October 2008 12:36 PM EST

K says:

They've also taken The Property Shop off which is unfortunate- the show site is already off hgtv.ca. Emailing the feedback line noted above does nothing- I have emailed them before about shows and no response.

Thursday, 02 October 2008 13:58 PM EST

Steph says:

Since when is Don Mills between Eglinton and York Mills the suburbs? That's just silly. I'd even say calling the Bayview Village area the suburbs is a stretch.

Thursday, 02 October 2008 14:04 PM EST

blog_mod says:

Hi K, thanks for your comment.

Emailing feedback@hgtv.ca is the best way to express your programming concerns.

All concerns and all emails sent to HGTV's viewer relations (feedback@hgtv.ca) are processed and taken into consideration and although a show is currently not being aired, it does not mean that it may not return at a later date in the future.

Cheers!

VW says:

Russ - you are correct (I drove by the house the other day). that style of house is very distinctive in the Don Mills neighbourhood.

Guy - I totally feel/agree to your comment how sad that all the lovely mid-century houses are being torn down and turned into monster homes. I love the distinctive character of the older homes. And with the size of an avg hhld nowadays, I wouldn't want to live in a house where I don't get to see my family.

Pauline Nelson says:

How lucky are you guys in Canada, to have the fabulous Sarah and team on your doorstep[so to speak]
We here at the bottom of the world in New Zealand love her shows, and like you have followed her since her the beginning What a pity if Design Inc is never to be seen again!
Personally my sisters and daughters are her BIGGEST fans and adore her very clever and beautiful designs.
A big cheer for Tommy too. I love their interaction.
We are behind the times with regards to the show and are only up to kitchen/dining room, show 1., how delighted are we to know we have another show to look forward too

I will email hgtv feedback to express my dissapointment.

I'm looking forward to watching this house evolve into another beautiful home by Sarah.
Looking forward to Tuesday evenings.

i emailed michael prini of primevista, the producer of design inc, design inc is NOT cancelled! apparantly sarah is just very busy with sarah's house and it is hard to air two shows at once.

Saturday, 04 October 2008 12:58 PM EST

Mary says:

Design Inc. showed not only beautiful designs, but the process of getting from beginning to end. Whether it was selecting a rug, a sideboard, or colours for a room. Not only do we want to see a wonderful room/house at the end....but many of us want to know and understand the process...since we cannot hire professionals. Please do not cancel Design Inc.

Saturday, 04 October 2008 22:58 PM EST

Terry says:

Thanks for focusing on a backsplit. I own one of these houses, although a very different layout than this, and have been waiting a long time for one of the design shows to work their magic with a backsplit.

Sarah said the structural budget for the master bedroom came in at about $10000. Does this include any of the decorating that a person would take with them when they moved out. So the budget would include the flooring the installed lights, etc. but not the furniture?

Sarah's the best designer! I have learned so much from her. I just finished my kitchen and I owe so much to her! Love ya!

Sunday, 19 October 2008 01:20 AM EST

Barbara says:

Kudos to Sarah. Finally a real designer is embracing a mid-century backsplit! My own 60's backsplit in Hamilton is very much like Sarah's, always loved the clean lines and open spaces of this era of homebuilding. I look forward to seeing what she does to her own home without tearing it down and replacing it with a new/traditional McMonster.

Please, people, READ the thread!! "Design Inc." has not been canceled!! Right now "Sarah's House" airs Tuesdays at 9pm on HGTV. Filming of "Sarah's Cottage" has been completed and will be airing this coming spring (2009). And Sarah has a new 10 week old daughter at home, as well as her 2 year old daughter. She can't shoot 3 shows at the same time..."Design Inc." will return as soon as Sarah's schedule allows time to shoot another season.
Where did I hear this? From Sarah herself, at a live appearance this past weekend at the "Style at Home" show in Toronto.

Monday, 20 October 2008 12:03 PM EST

So glad to hear Design Inc. will be coming back. I can certainly understand the time constraints for Sarah. Looking forward to seeing the current house completed and also the new episodes of Sarah's cottage. The Design Inc. team is great as well as Tommy and Sarah. By far my favourite designer since I first starting watching her on Room Service. Keep the great shows coming!!

My youngest daughter, who is 14, also loves to watch design shows & enjoys Sarah's shows the best. She is inspired to become an interior designer as well. Mary Packham says:

How nice to see this house reno-ed! It's exactly like the house I grew up in in Weston. I loved that house; it was a very innovative design for its time.
Sarah makes the house amazing; functional, more spacious because it's now on four levels and wonderful for a family because of the great back-yard.
What we did in basement was to do loops as kids on "belly-boards" that my Dad made us. These were like skateboards, but were built for us to lie on our bellies and wroom like mad in loops around the basement while we exercised our arms.
Your show brought back neat memories. When I heard you were doing a backsplit, I really hoped it would be familiar. How nice that its the identical house!
Thanks Sarah and Tommy!

Zara Mariam says:

Okay so I am a bit out of the loop, SARAH did that beautiful house and sold it, she bought another house and is trying to make it look as pretty which it does, I love the pool its so nice she manages to make everything great, but she also had a great budget to work with as well. I would love to hire her because she create classic rooms, and she also mixes the inexpensive with the overpriced to create a chic look, Love it, but I still need to be up to speed with this new house I am a bit confused. Help?

Nov 25 2008: very sad...I missed the first part of the Family Room episode and wanted to view it on web...however I can not seem to see either the Family room episode video or the Tween episode video now :( Is this something on my end or yours? Thanks for any help with this... Also big thanks to Sarah for making this show an educational experience (gosh, who thought learning stuff could be fun!). Love the knowledge on mixing woods, fabrics and can hardly wait now to try and reupholster a chair myself (ok you didn't teach that but I know what fabric to use now!).

lnv says:

Designers or decorators? [Have only seen basement and living room/entry shows]

S & T are the masters of pattern and color. Very good. Yet, is it the TV show-format that keeps the design "in the box"? The inside-outside connection is very weak on the backyard side (would have loved a sunken patio instead of skimpy steps); and the bow-become-box window (does nothing to capture the front yard or relate to the street). Doors instead of the box window would have connected to the outside. Skylights and vertical light would have taken the space to the next level.

That fire place should have been moved around. The finished room on TV looks too much like a couch and a coffee table. It needed one iece of canvass, not 12 metal framed prints. The sofa lights are too pretty. The promise of the house was all the "space" it had. The challenge is to make the space play. Stay tuned...

Lookin' forward to the kitchen.

I would have blown the walls away and worked with a one-large-room concept in the vaulted area (living-entry-dining-kitchen... if I'm reading the plan right). Before you move in the furniture, you really have to deal with the space... literally, the 'ether' between the walls, ceilings and floor.

I am all in for the idea of finding homes that have not been renovated for the blank slate.

Just want more architecture with the design. However, the entertainment value of the "S&T Show" just keeps going up and up. Keep going, you guys, show's great.

Saw the Kitchen-dining show this morning. Yep, the walls came down alright. Yet, the feeling is that the design sense remained low.

While it is an interesting premise to say "let's see what we can do with out-of-the-box cabinets", the over-riding issue is always to design good space, n'est-ce pas?

On TV the kitchen disappoints. Why put an apartment-style kitchen—dark and hemmed-in—in a house? Why lose the window? Eliminating daylight won't make sense to those working in a space where they can't look out.

Oh, and they can't look at their guests either. The sink faces the front door and the stove a blank wall. The cabinets over the fridge look odd. The oven by the fridge awkward. The critical issue in choosing a dish washer for an open kitchen is sound-proofing—the visuals come second.

Then there is the 9-foot dining room slider that is really 4.5-feet, isn't it? The reason we like french doors is that we can make them fold out of way for those magical summer and late fall nights for flow-thru experiences that are truly 9-feet wide. Indoor becomes out, and vice versa.

Great dining room chairs, and thick glass top pedestal table. The top must weigh as much as a piano! There was good TV in the bait-and-switch.

Less crazy about the pair of stools facing the kitchen. Yet, this is just more fall out from a pedestrian kitchen.

A slide-show of photo stills really failed to portray the sense-of-space. A color scheme that is "beige-on-taupe" is ...fine.

The outdoor space (another episode?) really didn't seem to be part of the dining-kitchen experience. We weren't even given the solar orientation: Is there sun in the kitchen-dining for breakfast?

There are two structural issues to review.

First, in the interest of informing the viewing public, it should have been stressed that pulling down the walls and installing beams bearing on a corner post requires that the post be continuously connected to solid bearing. Show that or risk a walk on from Mike Holmes.

Second, the better solution to bricking-in the window in the kitchen would be to turn it into a second french door. Explain the structural advantages of that!

Matching the dining room, and creating a "special wall" along the full side of the house, a second door in the kitchen (where the window was) begs questions about the side for which we were given neither an orientation, nor information on what exactly is on the outside.

While I can agree that (1) finding a house with no "improvements"; and (2) blowing away the walls of the kitchen to make a living-kitchen-dining-entry space; are primary lessons in approaching a reno, the back-beat to this kind of enterprise must be injecting joy into the details.

PS

Were not shown the spatial relationship between the "Battlestar Gallactica" stair railings and the kitchen.

I can't believe design Inc. is cancelled we need designer's like Sarah, so many shows are over the top or they add foolish skits that make me change channels.

For years I have been watching Sarah Richardson, whether it's Room Service, Design Inc. (with other incredible designers-you guys are amazing), Sarah's House 1 and now Sarah's House 2. There are not enough words to describe the professionalism and the warmth in her designs and dealings. She is the 'BEST'. HGTV, keep Sarah continuing on your channel. Hope there will be a book containing the before and after pictures of House 1 and 2. By the way, congratulations to an incredible young woman and mother of two. Great example for HGTV. Have you ever thought of a 2-hour special on an updated Christmas show with Sarah and her designers?

Does anyone know if curb appeal is the final episode? I hope that there will be a wrap up of the cost break down etc...
I miss design inc. and think that Sarah's house could be stretched into a 1 hour episode each week. There are so few good design shows on now. Everything is getting so tacky lately.

Love, love, love everything Sarah does! Her style is impeccable and I enjoy watching it all come together. I think Room Service was 4 seasons and Design Inc. has had 4 seasons so I bet Sarah's House will have 4 seasons too and then she will move on to something new.

Anyone know how much Sarah sold Lacewood Cr for? I see it's off of MLS? According to the episode she would have needed to sell it for $906,000 to make a profit (excluding realtor fees which I'm guessing are waived since the agent is a personal friend) and when i last checked she had dropped the price to $899,000.

Just watched the episodes of Sarah's House #2 again on the New Year's DAy marathon... I have watched her as well since Room Service and she is by far the best Interior Designer out there... We love her and Tommy they are so good and talented at what they do... Every room they do always looks so amazing when they are done.. There has never been a room even on Design Inc. that they have done that I have not loved... Awesome job it makes for great T.V.

Thoroughly enjoyed today's marathon. I would like to know the name of a place in Ottawa to spray kitchen cabinets. I have been looking for sometime. Sarah's House is light years ahead of every other design show on air. Thanks!

Iris says:

I was so thrilled to see the marathon on Sarah's House last night since I missed most of the episodes for the mid century modern. It sure turned out beautifully. I've been watching Sarah's show from the very beginning and have always felt her sense of style is fabulous. I love the show, the way Tommy and Sarah get along so well, and THEY inspire me. I grew up in Toronto, but left to move to a small town in Ontario for a less hectic life, and I was thrilled when I found my mid century modern ranch hidden away right here in my new town. Naturally when I saw the episode for the new show I was very interested to see what the transformation would look like. My home was also in need of a transformation to bring it up to the present century without destroying integrity of the design. We have just finished our restoration and love it very much. It is sad that these types of homes are now few and far between, but I'm glad to own one. Really looking forward to future episodes. Sarah you're an inspiration and a true original.

Glad to see that someone else (Steph)from Don Mills recognized the Don Mills House, When I first saw the 1st episode of Sarahs House season 2 I said to myself that house is in Don Mills and after watching the marathon was able to go into the website and figure out exactly where the house was. I had a friend who use to live over in that area so the style of homes was familiar to me.

I live in a small town about 2 hours from Toronto. A place called Walkerton. I'm sure some of you have heard of. Anyway I just love Sarah Richardson just like everyone else. Can you please help those of us who are not easily accessible to the finds that you have in the city. I love your episode of the last home and would like to know that I could possibly have access to some of the of the items that you imputed towards the family room (meaning the wood cabinets)and also the paint and finishes that you have accomplished throughtout. I deal with a store here that sell Benjamin Moore paint. Any help at all would be greatful as this is a small town and we do like to shop local if possible. Thanks a million

Sarah Bradbury, Abstract Artist and a Don Mills Back Split Owner says:

I like the fact that Sarah Richardson appreciates Don Mills architecture. However, I am confused as to why then she removed or covered up all of the amazingly groovy, original, classic modern interior features and details of this historical house! Yes, what she did is lovely but not for don mills and not at the expense of this rare, museum quality home. The only good thing is that she didn't tear the house down and build a "Neo-Classical" or "American Colonial" ice cream castle.

You should see my new "Sarah Bedroom and Bath"

I am renovating my 1950's bunglow. Doing white carrara marble in the bath. Your reno has confirmed my choices and I'm so excited to get started. Can you recommend a marble dealer, reasonable in price? I'm doing the floor and shower and will need a significant amount so any help in finding the most reasonable price would be appreciated. So far, I've found $8 a sq. ft.

Sunday, 15 March 2009 09:41 AM EST

Nelia: I used the exact same ones that Sarah used in the low bath. It's the sticker decals from IKEA. I used them in my powder room. They don't stick on as well as I thought but they look very nice and you can design them anyway you want.

Judy L-Vancouver BC says:

Lori:
I too used white marble in the bath. Even though I am on the west coast, Saltillo tiles in the Toronto area provided me with a local dealer who had the product trucked to me from the east (Tip: you can ask them the price of the product you want when you call so you can assess how much the dealer marks it up). I picked it up from the trucking depot. I used the white fiorito marble (not carrara) for the floors but I am sure they have both. I have seen carrara at home depot for $6/sq ft. in 12'X12" size. The tiles I got from Saltillo were 12" X 24" for the floor, plus a 2" hexagon in carrera for the shower floor. Walls were done in an inexpensive white porcelain 8" X 10" in a brick pattern with an eye level trim about 4" wide in marble to tie it in with the floor (a trick from Sarah's house season 1 master bath). This allows for a more expensive marble on the floors and countertops.
Hope that helps

I would like to take a moment to recognize Tommy Smythe for his brilliance. They (Sarah and Tommy)are a force to be recconded with. I love that Tommy thinks high end but is able to locate a bargin when push comes to shove. Tommy you are a chip off the Sarah block and ready to launch your own show if Sarah is too busy for Design Inc. you could certainly take that challenge on.
