What's Hot in Design, From a Lady Who Knows

Let’s face it, if something has been identified as “in” or “on trend” in design, there’s bound to be an original inspiration from which it came. An adaptation or renewal of an existing product or idea can be all you need to make the old seem new. Here are three of some of my most favorite current design trends that owe their popularity to a fresh take on a past idea.

Brass

Daniel Farmer; prop stylist, Sasha Seymour's kitchen, House & Home

The Brick House

There is a slow revival of warmer metals going on such as brass in furniture, hardware and accessories. As much as sleek chromes and stainless steels are still bestsellers, if you adore a soft golden hue paired with a more vintage look as much as I do, then this trend is definitely one to adopt.

Yellow Doors

Remodelista

Pretty.Little.World.; Remodelista

I recently read somewhere that if you painted the front door of your house yellow, you would increase your chances of a speedy sale. With words such as optimism, enlightenment and happiness associated with this particular colour, it does seems to make sense. Although coloured doors are not a new trend, yellow doors seem to be picking up momentum in gaining a fan base, especially among those daring enough to add vibrant colour to their life!

Ombre

Decor8

Martha Stewart; Apartment Therapy

A French term meaning “graduated shading” and pronounce ohm-bray, this look has been seen on catwalks across the globe for several seasons now. It’s no secret that most trends in home decor are directly related to those in fashion, and though some are more difficult to translate than other, simple touches of gradient colour on things such as lamp shades, canvases, small upholstered items and even your staircase, can make a statement ithout too much fuss.

That kitchen!! I love it. And I need to get that lampshade... such a beautiful, subtle effect. Totally agreed about the brass, which reminds me - I need to get more of that, too :) Great post!

Hi, I like the ideas for the brass basics, however with the warm tones,

would it still be appropriate to put neutral beige carpets on stairs and bedrooms ?
