This cozy basement from Sarah 101 has a warm, welcoming vibe that suits the space with an easy colour palette to try in your own home.
There's no need to go dark in a basement when you have standard small windows with limited light. Sarah used one creamy wall colour throughout, Pearl SR30 (P5226-24) by Para, which makes the space bright and leaves room for lots of pops of red tones mixed with rich woods.
There are several shades of red in this room, but it doesn't seem overwhelming or too matchy-matchy because of the use of pattern. I count eight different patterns -- which may sound like a lot, but in Sarah's hands it works because they're of a similar theme. In this case, we have busier, bohemian patterns (the ikat pillow on the couch, the arm chair and the panel fabric) mixed with classic patterns like stripes and the window-pane-inspired larger pillow on the couch.
This palette would also suit a dining room -- some colour theorists claim that red stimulates the appetite!
Clockwise from top left: Fisherman's pendant lamp, Pebbles to Sand; Laguiole serving set, Williams Sonoma; Rainbow napkins, West Elm; Red Wire T12-7, Behr
