Discuss: Sarah 101 Ep. 4 Industrial Soul Bedroom

Sarah has been using a lot of bold colours and really mixing things up on her new show! I quite liked the blue she used in Andrew's bedroom, Coin Silver P2146-04 by Para Paints. I also just plain old love the industrial loft qualities of this space, like the exposed brick, large windows and wooden ceiling. And that rug! Loved it.

Did you think this room was masculine enough? How did you feel about the "non-floral" dragon fabric used for the bed?

I love this room. I wish my room was like this one, except that my husband is not the bold colours and fabrics type. This is one of my favourites Sarah's rooms so far/

I am terribly disappointed.  This is not the kind of decorating I like.  Too many colours and too bold for me.

January 26, 2011 1:14 PM

This is a bit too much for me also.  Would have preferred to see a different headboard - more muted - as there's enough color in the rest of the room.  There's too much competition with the area rug which in itself has enough pattern.

I love it! Can't wait to watch this episode now.

January 26, 2011 3:26 PM

Too much color for me too.  I would have chosen a neutral rug and headboard

Im a little disappointed by Sarah 101 alltogether

I much prefered Design Inc. and Sarah's house 1 and 2, and Sarah's Cottage

Love Sarah and Tommy and their eye for design, structure, detail and new ideas.  I'm intrigued by the new show but am not a fan of the 'final' rooms.  Love the furniture, the fabrics but cannot deal with the colour (loud) on the walls.  I do miss Design Inc. and the House's.

January 26, 2011 5:44 PM

I agree with most of the comments above. It's too much. Sarah's starting to lose me with this show. The space here had so much potential to begin with but she went overboard with too much competing pattern and colour. That fabulous rug would have been gorgeous with a more neutral bed and I would have loved to have seen some industrial pieces that weren't in primary colours. I did like the lamps though. Perfect porportions.

OMFG

January 26, 2011 8:02 PM

I'm a die hard Sarah and Tommy fan..but for the first time ever I found the end result of this room to look like an amateur had done it...overdone with everything in the room fighting for attention - and the only relief from the riot of color and pattern is the white bedspread on the bed.

I'll forever be a fan but Sarah 101 has yet to inspire and regretably I have not enjoyed it as much as her previous shows.

That said..I think us Sarah lovers can afford her a couple bad days!

January 26, 2011 8:22 PM

Quite dissapointed. I like Sarah with her neutral colours, this is too much.

January 26, 2011 10:14 PM

I absolutely love the rug and the dragon fabric worked wonderfully with it - I did not like the blue on the wall or the industrial pieces as furniture.  I know it was a loft, but I thought those aspects made it too hard and cold. All in all I could not get a sense of the room, because there did not appear to be something cohesive between the furniture and the fabrics so I could not get  a real sense of the room.  It seemed very muddled.  But I love you, Sarah and Tommy!

January 27, 2011 12:48 AM

I would like this space better if the TV cabinet and side tables were white. I don't like the chair at all... It looks wrong in this space. I don't like the bed either... I love how Sarah used the blinds and drapes though! looks perfect.  I love Sarah and Tommy and I am so happy to see them every week!

January 27, 2011 2:23 AM

Agree with most of the comments. Sarah 101 is a bit of a disappointment.  I would not want to have any of the rooms done this far (1-4). It is almost like lets pick the wildest fabric we can find and then try and design around it no matter how ugly.

January 27, 2011 10:27 AM

I can't believe you guys complain so much of this room. Why always the boring type and their neutral colours have to win. The best of this room is how rich it is and at the same time soothing it makes you be in your room. Rather than boring neutrals that mekes you leave the house. People be risky once in a while.

January 27, 2011 12:26 PM

I loved elements of this room (those yellow lamps, the dragon fabric) but I hated it on the whole - especially since it was for a guy. I'm sorry Sarah, it was not masculine in any way no matter how you spin it.

I love decorating with colour, but I didn't personally like the use of primary colours. It felt kindergarten-ish or something.

I think it's honestly the first Sarah (and Tommy) decorated room that I didn't like.

January 27, 2011 7:39 PM

What a surprise!  I usually love S & T's rooms, but this bedroom was just awful.  And why spend all that money on the dragon fabric headboard when the pillow arrangement hid it? Oh, boooooo!

January 27, 2011 8:58 PM

I love Sarah and Tommy and most of their designs, but this room has too much of the primary colors. It was too busy for me, your eye didn't know where to land. Plus.. antlers?! oh please.. geez. I thought the antlers made it look more like a hunting lodge, not my kind of style.

January 28, 2011 12:56 AM

What has happened to Sarah and Tommy? I have not liked any of the rooms in Sarah 101. And I usually love Sarah. She has been trying to move into bold colours but it is just not working. Sorry, but this series is one hot mess. I miss Design Inc.

January 28, 2011 9:25 AM

Loved Sarah's other shows...the loft bedroom was a big disappointment.  I loved the dragon fabric but not in this application...would have looked much better on the chair.  The primary colours made it look like a child's bedroom...sorry not a fan of the new show...love Sarah and Tommy though!

January 28, 2011 11:32 AM

I agree with many of the comments, not a fan of this room. This series is a disappointment.

January 28, 2011 12:11 PM

Have to agree with most of the other comments, not a big fan of this room.  I much prefereed Design Inc. over this new show.  What really gets me is that Sarah is a high-style designer who doesn't do rooms on the cheap.  If the point of this show is to teach people how to pull a room together, I think it would be helpful if she disclosed where she got things and the final budget for the rooms.

January 28, 2011 1:52 PM

The problem with this room is that there is no clear focal point. I suspect Sarah expected the head and footboard to bring the room together, but with such a low headboard the result is that there is no big visual magnet to draw everything together. Some other items are also too small in scale--the lamps, the tables at the end of the bed for instance seem to float.

January 28, 2011 3:41 PM

I hated this room, the carpet was ugly and not at all appropriate for an industrial loft. the headboard was atrocious and again not appropriate. If she wanted to bring some warmth into the space she should have used more woods and neutrals or more leather, I liked the idea of leather.

January 28, 2011 8:35 PM

I am too very dissapointed with the show.  Sarah is known for her quiet, calm, neutral designs....what on earth happened to her!  All the rooms for this show look tacky and will not stand the test of time.  I am very dissapointed!  I'd rather watch re-runs of design inc...

January 28, 2011 9:48 PM

I think this room is FANTASTIC! You have to keep in mind who this room is designed for. A young, fun, male client. They are all pieces he can take to another home in the future and use in different ways. I love all the colour and the "tatoo" effect of the headboard and footboard is spot on. Sarah and Tommy are challenging us and taking us somewhere we haven't been before. Keep it up you two - I can't wait for the next room.

January 29, 2011 2:04 AM

there is no tatoo effect in the fabric. it is floral with a hidden dragon in there somewhere.  Perhaps a grandma may find it tatoo-ish.  This room is terrible on so many levels.

January 29, 2011 3:29 PM

This room is an epic failure . There are too many patterns , too many colors and too much stuff.  This room is in no way masculine. Is this really what the home owner wanted? Considering the head board was a real bold statement , why such a busy rug?  And didn't Sarah mention that the rug was really expensive? If this series is a lesson on designing 101 , maybe Sarah should consider offer realistic solutions , not going on flights of fancy . In the past , she has done very well with industrial spaces and  condos for male clients. She did a room for Stephen Sutch on Design inc, and for a small space that was featured in Canadian house and home.

This season of sarah 101 has been a huge disappointment Her room so far with the bright colors have been borderline kitschy if not tacky . Using 10 or 12 busy fabrics in one single room does not make a great room , it just makes it really LOUD.

I know that Sarah and Tommy are trying to shake it up a little. But they are kind of headed in the WRONG direction.

On the flip side, Sarah's booth at IDS 2011 ,  is very pretty.

I am eagerly anticipating the return of Sarah's House in the mean time.

January 30, 2011 3:32 AM

I noticed that the client didn't mention the bed, or rug or any of the other bright pieces. He said he liked the way the room worked, the curtains and especially his old keepsakes. Silence speaks volumes.

January 30, 2011 10:15 AM

Still loving Sarah and Tommy but not liking the primary colours. I'm really looking forward to Sarah's "Church" aka Sarah's House IV.

January 30, 2011 12:46 PM

I adore this room.  As a young guy living in downtown Toronto, I would love to have that bedroom.

I'm disappointed to see so many comments from viewers who can't appreciate exciting, fun, colourful, bold design even if it doesn't appeal to them personally.  There are a lot of very "pretty" rooms on Sarah Richardson's shows that I couldn't really see myself living in, but I'm happy to acknowledge that they are beautifully designed.

I am also a bit distressed by the obsession some viewers have with a clear-cut idea of what is feminine and what is masculine design.  Folks...it's a bedroom.  Old school gender divide = not sexy.

January 31, 2011 12:27 AM

This room lacks the cohesiveness that Sarah's rooms in the past have had. The bold colors and busy fabrics doesn't lend to a sense of breathability to this space. Sarah's rooms previously have usually been airy and light, something that many viewers have become used to and probably expect.

While these spaces on Sarah 101 may make for exciting design, I doubt that it will make for timeless design. Which , in the past, Sarah has always aimed for.

January 31, 2011 3:48 AM

I agree with Mark on this one. While I would never decorate my bedroom like this I can still appreciate the design. Its a young, hip and industrial design that looks fresh. I feel like so many people dislike this show because they are looking for neutral spaces. People keep referencing Sarah's house episodes and saying they want more of that, but this show isn't Sarah's house. Plus Sarah used a lot of color in all of her Sarah's house seasons so I'm not quite sure why everyone is all of a sudden afraid of color. She ALWAYS picks bold fabrics for her rooms so it is somewhat confusing that all of a sudden people don't like this approach? Personally I really like Sarah 101 and the tips that Sarah and Tommy give. Just because she used primary colors doesn't mean that you have to use them too. Just use different colors with the same rules/guidelines......

January 31, 2011 10:40 AM

While personally, I'm not a fan of the rug or the headboard, it does seem too be what the client asked for. POW. Be careful what you ask for is the lesson here. Not all these rooms are going to be for everyone, and it's nice to see a little bit of crazy once in a while to balance out the usually more toned down looks.

January 31, 2011 12:26 PM

I love how Sarah is moving away from the "white + accent" scheme.  I think it has been done so many times before and is literally looking quite old. This look is so fresh and young and inspiring.  She's is a color and pattern genius.  Incredible.... absolute artistry.

January 31, 2011 2:11 PM

I love how this room seems to find favor with the young (under 30) hip urban commenters and how the 30 plus's are not into it.  I still say they have been brain washed by Ikea.

January 31, 2011 2:21 PM

What a disgrace to the world of decorating.  This blue paint is what I had in a bedroom when I bought my house 15 years ago.  It was the first room to be painted.  It actually was glaring in my eyes.  I would never use this colour because it is gaudy, tacky and looks like a kindergarten classroom.  I can't believe she used this.  Tommy needs to get some training and not be such a 'yes man'.  All he ever does is agree with Sarah.  Maybe if he said no once in a while the room would not look like this.  I guarantee in 6 months the client will have repainted just like on Debbie Travis.

February 1, 2011 2:08 PM

Loved the dragon fabric & the use of it on the headboard/footboard, as well as the plaid pillows.  Always have hated oriental rugs ... so 19th century, don't ya think?  I expect to see Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot lolling about anytime I see a rug like that.  Ick!  A slate blue in a less intense hue would've been better on the wall.  Maybe the plaid instead?  But gosh, I am jealous of that entire wall of closets and all that space ...

February 1, 2011 5:37 PM

Awful.  Sorry but there hasn't been one room on 101 so far that I've liked.  I don't think any of the patterns in this room compliment anything and that blue paint is so harsh.  As stated above, why waste all that money on the headboard when you can't even see it?  Either the dragon fabric or the rug has to go.

February 2, 2011 3:24 AM

I have disliked all of the rooms on her new show. They are too electic, they look messy and no cohesive at all. I'm thoroughly disappointed. She used to design rooms that worked together and were beautiful. Now everything is messy and looks like a child threw it together.

February 2, 2011 11:01 AM

I think the take away from this series is that 2011 is all about being big and bold and maybe even a little quirky if you want... just really not being afraid to let your personality come through in your spaces. Yes we all love Sarah's signature style, but I also appreciate that she is stretching her wings and trying something new in this series! Doing the same thing over and over is no fun!
