Top 5 Friday: Upcycling Ideas (Start As One Thing, End As Another!)

Whether you call it upcycling, reusing, refurbishing or reimagining, today's Top 5 Friday is all about finding decor inspiration and doing it yourself.

Headboard From Wooden Skids (aka Pallets)

This idea came courtesy of Julia Black from Pure Design, who hosted a video series for us called The Green Geek. Watch how she transformed three skids and some salvaged wood into a beachy white headboard for a queen size bed (three skids are the perfect size!).

Chair Turned Bathroom Caddy

This is one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" ideas. Cut the seat and legs from an antique chair, use a level to make it straight, attach securely to the wall (you may need to find a stud for peace of mind) -- et voila! A DIY bathroom caddy perfect for a powder room or guest bathroom. (Hey, you might as well put it somewhere people can admire your creativity!)

Large Wooden Spool Turned Art Table/Coffee Table

I was actually inspired last night at the bus stop (in front of a condo construction project) by four large wooden spools just sitting around, just the perfect size and shape for my current coffee table conundrum. If they're still there tomorrow, I might just go back...So today I specifically searched for a photo that illustrated my dream, and wouldn't you know? Design*Sponge of course had an adorable example. Though I'm not sure if you can buy these, I bet you could scavenge one from a construction site (just ask nicely) or purchase at a salvage goods store.

Vintage Crates Turned Storage

This isn't a new idea, but it's a good one! Even Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge mentioned them in her trends video. I like these two treatments because they show two different ideas: mixing and matching crates and using the same type in a grid. Both achieve that well-worn, homey vibe with little effort.

Suitcase Turned Chair (Love!)

Seriously, isn't this amazing? People come up with the craziest things.

Have you created anything from something else? We'd love to hear about it! You can also upload photos to our Flickr or Facebook groups, or Tweet a photo @hgtvcanada.

Comments:

fantastic ideas! I think I'd like to do the headboard for one of my spare bedrooms. the only one I'm not too sure of is the suitcase chair - I don't know it,  just doesn't do anything for me.

The cable spool cracks me up. When I was a teenager I worked in Lake Louise and lived in the "Arrowhead Motel". The cable spool was a coveted piece of furniture in our shabby little space. I remember getting the keys first one year and rummaging through the cabins for the best stuff.

An article like this would have been a great help back then!

Chair caddy and Suitcase chair?! Awesome. I've been slowly (over several years) working up to a do it myself tufted headboard but a chair! Now you've got me thinking.
