Splurge vs Steal: Modern Mailboxes

I find that in my pursuit for the right balance, inside and out, there is experimenting, like when you create a recipe from scratch. Often I hear myself saying “a little of this, a little of that,” but ultimately it has to be tasteful. Recently I was challenged by outdoor accessories -- specifically, the mailbox. With older homes there is inherent character and historic charm, so a slight juxtaposition through modern accents adds just the right balance.

Left, Umbra; Right, Restoration Hardware

A great option for a sleek-looking mailbox is Umbra’s Postino Mailbox made from brushed stainless steel, measuring 7.5” x 14” x 4” (also available in black), with a price tag of $105. While shopping the marketplace I also came across the Horizontal Mailbox at Restoration Hardware. The comparably sleek look with clean, modern lines was a satisfying option, and at $89 it was a little more wallet-friendly. Made from stainless steel and measuring 14” x 4-1/2” x 8” it's similar in size and includes mounting hardware. The Horizontal is also available in Vertical shape and in a variety of finishes such as Polished Brass and Oil Rubbed Bronze.

Love the boxes.  I'm looking for a rural steel box approximately 8-1/2" W X 14" D X 9" T.  Any ideas?

When my dtr. was single and owned a Townhouse,  I faux finished her little old plain-jane mailbox and house numbers in a faux copper finish.    Five years later when she sold the house (in two days) I was pleased to learn it was one of the smaller  features that  had caught the buyer's eye.

Just proves, tasteful and unusual  mailboxes can be 'a good thing'.  :)         -Brenda-

Just an FYI for those in the Atlantic provinces, that Umbra mailbox is available in the steel finish at Kent Building Supplies for about $75
