Modern Country: The Story of a Pair of Country Chairs

country chairs

Meet my chairs. They're simple chairs; second hand, painted white and full of creaks and they suit my country lifestyle perfectly. They sit at the heads of the dining room table.

Good idea: buying four plexiglass chairs to sit around the rest of the table. Bad Idea: believing scotch guard could save the upholstery on the country chairs from my toddler.

oil cloth

Good idea
: ordering oil cloth online from a company called Lazy Susan. They carry all kinds of retro groovy oil cloth. I had a plan!

The dining room, as you can see above, had become a bit of a playroom, so I grabbed my supplies and headed down to my work room, the Shabby Shack.

staples

Step one: remove the chair seats. Step two: pull out the staples and remove the old fabric.

Ah, the peace and quiet. reupholstering

Step three: staple on the new oil cloth fabric. Step four: feel proud! They're fantastic!

But...will they hold up to the toddler test?

chair spills

Spilled milk: not a problem. Ketchup and mustard: so not a problem.

The final test: a jar of our farm's blueberry lavender Missing Goat jam... Nothing a spoon and finger can't take care of!

I'm completely smitten with your project. I just bought a ton of oilcloth when i was in New York City... anyone know a good place to buy it in Toronto? I never see it here!!

The chairs are wonderful but the child is magnificent!   She must have had such fun being allowed to put the jam on the chairs.   Magic.

will the oil cloth survive an 8 week old kitten and a 4 year old cat?  I have no toddlers!

I teach art out of my home studio and my chairs are a mess!!  This is a great, and very colorful idea.  My only question is, are they comfortable to sit on for an extended period of time - ie. do they make bare legs "sweat"?  If not, I'm all about ordering some of that cute fabric.

My Mom was doing this in the 1950s!  But not with such pretty oil cloth!
