Nine days exploring Costa Rica’s Central Pacific Coast included a wide variety of accommodations; a lovely boutique B&B; a tin roofed jungle hut; a bunk in a dusty youth hostel next to a bus station (which I later learned was a significant hub for the region); and finally, thank the lord, 5 star, 20-room boutique Eco-Hotel and Reserve, Gaia.
Located in the Manual Antonio area, I was more than excited about Gaia’s proximity to one of the largest national parks in the country. The leap from coil spring bunks into crisp 500 thread count linens was just as welcomed, I won’t lie…
Gaia Hotel & Reserve is specifically designed with comfort, luxury and the environment in mind. Along with secluded architecture and majestic views, Gaia’s efforts to minimize tourism's effects on the ecosystem has won the hotel (among other impressive accolades), the title of Central America's Leading Green Hotel.
The resort is comprised of a collection of small, white buildings, nestled in a steep hillside lush within majestic coastal forests. Small infinity pools cascade down into each other, creating waterfalls. The common areas all boast beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and the pristine landscape teems with innumerable examples of local wildlife.
Though we love ourselves a splurge, budgetary constraints dictated we choose the modest “jungle suite”. At 350 square feet it is the smallest and least expensive room in the hotel, but it was 350 square feet of open, airy indulgence. A smart layout allowed for the inclusion of a living area, a wall of windows made the breathtaking views ever-present, and sliding French doors exposed or enclosed the luxe bathroom – add touches such as a flat screen TV, complimentary Costa Rican coffee, AVEDA spa products, fluffy robes and umbrellas (much needed during Costa Rica’s inevitable rainy season) and you can say we were left lacking for nothing!
