Getaway Question of the Week: Theme Decor from Faraway Places -- Not for You?

Room from Debbie Travis's Facelift

The word 'theme' sends a signal to the hairs on the back of my neck to get ready, because if the words 'room' or 'decor' follow, those hairs will most certainly stand up.

No, themed decor is not at all for me.  As a rule, I am not a fan of anything that masquerades as something it is not; faux finishing, ceramic 'stone' tile, floating floors, gaudy hollow columns, etc.  By extension, I certainly don't subscribe to the idea of theme-ing rooms in the tradition of 'Island Retreat', 'Zen Den', 'Arabian Nights', and the like.  Incorporating a certain feel that takes cue from these traditions is one thing, but there's nothing like the view of my mucky, post-February backyard through some indoor palms and silk sarong curtains to expose the fact that I am most definitely NOT in Thailand.

And don't even get me started on Buddah heads...

Do you have a theme room in your home?  What's your word on this type of aesthetic?

I LOVE decorating with unique items from my travels. I specifically don't purchase a lot of decorative items, so I can buy them when I'm away somewhere!

I'm surprised anyone does this anymore after that movie with the little African statue coming to life and killing everybody.

Eclectic goodies from travel are what make you're home yours, full of the things that you love.  An entire room devoted to a travel destination is a different story.  I certainly would want to come home after a hard day and feel like I was in The Guvernment nightclub hookah lounge.

Tokyo's love hotels are themed for novelty.   I think that is the beginning, and the end of theme decor....  And p.s. my body is rejecting that horrible photo.
