Getaway Question of the Week: Hotels: Comfort and Amenities Or Charm and Character?

Until recently, a hotel room like the modern pink and turquoise one below was my absolute ideal. That is until I visited Costa Rica and was treated to the rustic charm of the lovely room with the tiled floors and floaty curtains below. While it's nice to be treated to Egyptian cotton sheets, king-size beds and huge showers once in a while, I'd give up luxury for cozy warmth, even if it means finding a spider in the bathroom!

Which do you prefer: ultimate luxury or charming rustic comfort?  Take a Poll and leave your answers below!

I have stayed in 5 stars to dorm bed hostels and often on the same trip. While the comforts of a 5 star are fabulous and welcomed.. theres a certain grit and charm that you can get from a guest house or small family run hotel that cannot be beat.  I am also all for a more authentic experience, which you don't usually find the same place as hight thread count sheets...

When I leave the comfort of my home to go away on vacation, I do so not anticipating spending much time in my hotel room.  That being said, the upmost important quality of the room for me is it's cleanliness.  While travelling on business I've stayed at hotels where the cleanliness factor of the room was questionable at best.  I don't feel comfortable in a room where I'm wondering if the sheets on the bed have been changed, or I'm grossed out walking on the carpet.

Comfort and amenities always!  It is one of the reasons why I getaway.  To me charm and character is called 'home'.
