Question of the Week: Do You Clean Your Own House?

I daydream at least once a week about hiring someone to clean my condo. Unfortunately, guilt and embarrassment always win because I know that that money could be better spent on food (or shoes) and my mother would laugh at my needing help to clean 600 square feet. So I save some cash but to be honest, I do a mediocre cleaning job.

I can only imagine what it's like for people with big families and little kids — particularly working parents who, according to Stats Canada, spend more than two hours each day doing household chores.

So what about you? Do you have a cleaning lady (please excuse the antiquated term) or do you do the dirty work yourself?

Most definitely, couldn't or wouldn't see it any other way...Most cleaning services are okay in the beginning (to impress, I guess) but often end up slacking off.  Also I've heard and know of many cases where "things appear to go missing" after hiring cleaning help.  One home owner found sets of her high end antique silver cutlery, in the purse of her house cleaner, a fork, knife or spoon making their way out the front door, on a weekly  basis!

Guess I'm in the minority so far. We're a young couple that work long hours and then want to spend time together playing hard or just hanging out after work and on weekends. So its worth it to us to have the house cleaned and not have to spend our weekends cleaning our house instead of having quality time. Our "cleaning lady" is wonderful.

My mom always said if I could afford it, go for it and so I have.  Of course as a young family we are cleaning daily but at least I know once a week, every surface is scrubbed and shined to perfection andI can concentrate on more important things....my family!

I clean my own home. No one cleans as well as I do. I wouldn't trust a cleaning agency to come into my home.

When I was young, someone who was married once told me that a cleaning person (thought they're almost always women) can save a marriage.  Now that I am married I can honestly say they were right. Best $100 you'll ever spend.

I have had great cleaning crews from professional companies and horrible  cleaning crews, {under the toilet seat does not warrant scrubbing..YUk}

I prefer to do some things my self and other parts of the house I'm not so fussy about.

When my first child was born we hired a "cleaning lady", she did an alright job, but I always felt I could do a better job myself.  When we had to purchase a new car, we let her go.  As with my friends, as soon as more pressing expenses came along, the "cleaning lady" was the first expense cut out of our budget.  Now with 2 kids, we've learned to clean our home throughout the week so that we don't end up using our whole weekend for these chores.  The long and short of it....a "cleaning lady" is nice to have, but easy to do without.

i have bipolar depression and it's considerably debilitating.

i had a cleaning team come in when my bipolar depression relapsed. they cleaned very superficially and definitely not what i needed for a clean and peaceful environment (where my home provided comfort instead of squalor). and now my place is so dirty and embarassing I wouldn't even consider a cleaning company even if I thought they could do a thorough job. every once in a while I get some energy to do the dishes or the laundry, but it's rare when i'm able to vacuum, clean counters or walls, or even change my bed linens. i wish i

could do some/more cleaning.

With my busy family and running a web company, I don't have a whole lot of time to clean, but I do tend to focus on a room at a time and generally, it stays "liveable" LOL.  Of course, the kids help, like it or not!

I am weird I guess, but I enjoy cleaning my home. I am interested in making my home a refuge and an oasis of peace. My bed is an example: I want hospital corners, matching linens, and pleasingly arranged pillows. I had open heart surgery lately, and my dear husband tried bed making. I am happy to say I have recovered sufficiently to make the beds once again. It is such a pleasure to get back to normality!

Yes I do have a cleaning lady.  I am very lucky though.  My apartment is small and I live alone so she only comes in once a month.  The rest of the month I do a so so job and when she comes in she cleans from top to bottom.  She is a sister of a friend, can be totally trusted, and has been cleaning homes for a living for many years.  I am blessed!  She is worth every penny and then some.

I have dreamed about it for a long time, since we live in the country and the dirt is relentless but I just cannot justify the money for 800 square feet.

Yes, I have a "cleaning lady". Seven years ago, I was rear-ended in a car accident which resulted in severe neck, back and shoulder injuries for myself, so I am not physically able to clean the house the way that I would like it to be done. But, I get very upset when I have to tidy up the house before she "cleans", then empty the garbage and put things away after she leaves. As the years go by, her skills seem to be lacking. We live in a smaller community so there are not many choices available, so right now, this is better than us having to do it ourselves. I had a wonderful woman in the past, but she moved away. I would love to change and am on the look-out for a new helper. Next time I will definately have a trial period, I think that termination would not be as difficult to do.

I don't have a house cleaner. I cannot work out of home anymore and my health has let me down so I just putter away each day at cleaning and do the best I can. I do the scrubbing of floors on a day when I am not in total pain. Each day doing as much as possibel keeps me on top of things. Having my sons grown up and out now sure does keep the house tidier and cleaner . There is still enough to keep me very busy with laundry, meals, grocery shopping and all. I really don't have enough money now for a house cleaner and I love a clean home. My husband does the outdoor work.
