Question of the Week: Do You Want Answers?

If I've said it once I've said it a zillion times: I/we love it when you talk to us. We love your comments here on Style Sheet, be they friendly or biting, and want you to know that we read every one.  And because we read every one, we've noticed that at times -- often -- you have questions about our shows and hosts.

So.  Because I'm not always the best person to ask, I've lined up some HGTV Canada execs to shed light on anything you may want to know about your favourite channel. In a word: some real answers.

What would you like to see more of? How do shows get made? Questions about particular shows and/or hosts? Scheduling? Talk to me!

I'm sure many of your questions will overlap, and I'll do my best to organize them so that as many of them as possible get to the people pulling the strings!

What's more, I'm going to do it on video.  No creative copy editing to put words in their mouths or take them out.  You'll get to see our people on the spot!  (Btw, check out Food Network Canada's Leslie Merklinger settle the Great Duck Debate on CJ's foodnetwork.ca blog.  As a follow up, Leslie asks you, the readers, to help her name Chef David Adjey's new show -- see what she went with in the end.)

Now is your chance to get some answers, so lets hear some of your questions!

Comments:

I'd love to know why more shows can't be filmed in Vancouver. I have a house that is a blank, messy slate for some aspiring program, and I've thought of applying but everything is filmed in Toronto. I'm Canadian too! :) Also, a show that focuses on redoing your home in a child friendly style that still makes me smile each day in would be great.

Thanks for kicking off the questions Shelly, and with a great one at that.  We hear that a lot.

Here is my question, word for word posted on the Income Property entry on Sunday Jan.3):

I really enjoy the floorplans on this show-especially the kitchen lay-outs.  They always seem incredibly efficient, which is something that I envy while staring at my "blank canvas"-kitchen-reno at the moment.  Do you know if Scott designs the kitchens himself or hires out a professional kitchen design firm? (ie can I hire them too?)

Thanks Natalie, will let you know.

I have a condo which I need assistance in decorating. Peter Fallico is the person who could the job for us.We like his designs and the support people who work for him.

January 5, 2010 2:13 PM

Anne, this is also a common question - if hosts do design work outside their shows.  Thanks!

January 5, 2010 2:15 PM

Hi Natalie, regarding Income Property, Scott does work with a designer on each episode. If you visit hgtv.ca/incomeproperty, click on Episode Galleries, and choose an episode, you'll see a link for the Resource List for that episode. For example, on the first two episodes, the designer is listed as Dvira Ovadia and her website info is also listed. Hope this helps!

Here's some comments from our Facebook fan page -- are you a fan? You should be!

i want to see Sarah Richardson in my house. I need help with decor.

More garden shows that are about gardening throughout the seasons rather than landscape installations on a deadline.

I want Design Inc back in Italy pleeeeease!

more Design Inc..Sarah Richardson please.

I want to see more garden design shows this year. Not expensive yard makeovers so much as practical advice for home gardeners (along the lines of How To Be A Gardener by Alan Titchmarsh on the BBC). Something that shows how to grow veggies and fruits in small spaces, but to feed a family, without sacrificing too much yard space. Real life stuff like that. Though if you're offering expensive yard makeovers, where do I sign up?

Yeah...get Steven Sabados to do some of the stuff he did when he was starting out!

I miss Kitty Bartholomew, any chance you will start running some of her shows again?

If hosts do work outside their shows, how does one contact Peter Fallico to make an appointment to have it done? Please have someone from Peter Fallico's team contact me.  Thank you.

Question...I live in an apt and we aren't allowed to wallpaper. I found this gorgeous paper that I want to use for an accent wall in my bathroom. How can I put it up without "wallpapering"? Framing a large piece won't work because there is a towel rack and shelf on that wall which can only go on that wall. Thanks

HGTV is not what it used to be!  Years ago the Prime Time line up was amazing.  Now it has been replaced by useless trash.

How about House and Home, Take it Outside (filmed in Vancouver) Landscape Smart, Room to Grow, Green Space,

Home to Stay, Pure Design, Suzanne Dimma's show, just to

mention a few.   Also more landscape shows.

Really, HGTV is very disappointing to us.  Last night we sat

to watch the only good prime time show left -- Pure Design--

and its no longer on Prime Time?!

Can we get more Garden shows? Winter is the time to get ideas for the new season.

There are a lots of people who need simple solutions to thier yards which they can do for less $1000.00. Whether its tomatoes and vegetables for pickling or just upgading a tired yard.

Why do we need the BBC to do something first?  Now is the time for Home and Garden Canada to do something different. Thanks

I'd really be grateful to see more cottage makeovers.  For those of us that live in rural Canada, that fancy cottage charm, shows like Sarah's Cottage was spot on.

If only us average Joe's could afford the likes of Sarah Richardson and Samantha Pynn, then we might have a chance of seeing them in other parts of Canada.  Poor things must be busier then hell.

I appreciate them both (and their partners in design Tommy and Julia).  Thanks for letting us see your work, looking forward to more!

@Alicia Cox: Thanks for directing me to the resource guide.  I wasn't clear on whether the kitchen designs are usually done in this manner or just the decor.  I appreciate it!

I really like the line-up, but can only catch it at mom's when I'm visiting (as we don't have cable).  I devour all online episodes as soon as they go up, and have exhausted the back-episodes for all my favorite shows.  To chime in with gardening suggestions-we have a huge local food movement happening in my small town (this includes the 25-35 age group).  So the call for a program that details growing/preserving/cooking with home-made harvests would be popular.  Cheers!

Will Take it Outside (filmed in Vancouver)  ever come back?? That show was great. Any plans for shows that will do work in Vancouver? I'm quite tired of the "centre of the universe" getting all the perks, share the wealth.

I love your programs & have learned a great deal.

Please advise the paint brand & # that was used on the "Home to Stay" episode shown today, 06Jan2010, at 4:00pm in Ottawa.  The colour Peter Fallico mentioned was "Smokey Green" & I want for my liv.rm.

Thanks

Why is it ever time we watch Property Virgins that the host (Real Estate Lady) always has offers on the property that the clients are trying to buy? we watch this show very often but are thinking about finding us a agent that is more in the real world and watching her. The real world does not always have offers pending or on the table making the buyers pay more. They can't even consider making a offer less if they want to try after the Real Estate Lady has put it the way she has.

 Thanks Gene Parks

The Jan 8th episode of 'The Unsellables' featured a bedroom wall with the cutest black appliques, and I can't find them anywhere... any suggestions?

nice post. thanks.

I would love to see more gardening shows. The winter is when we are getting our ideas and have the time to watch garden shows. When spring comes we gardeners are outside not indoors watching TV!! I think it is silly that you also put the garden shows on so early in the morning in the spring. Please I would love to be able to watch your channel all day if there was a bit of mix, right now all it seems to focus on is home design and fix-ups.......gets to be too much after a while and I just need to change the channel!!

Mix it up and throw some garden shows in there!! Please & Thank you :)

Thanks

Lisa,

I agree, more shows filmed in Vancouver (Lower Mainland).  We have homes, condos and businesses that really NEED make-overs or fixin' up or just some TLC.  Let's get something soon!
