This is a bit of a find. The Pear Bureau – ambassadors of the pear – have quite the collection of holiday décor ideas available on their site. For your crafting pleasure: wreaths, garlands and centrepieces galore! Learn how to sugar and gold leaf a pear, and finally, see the secrets behind the striking ‘pear cone tree’ revealed!
Pear season is in full swing, and the fruit’s shape and beautiful shades of red, yellow, green and brown make its different varietals ideal for decorating with during the holidays. Easiest to find are the Bosc, Bartlett and Red Bartlett, but have a looks-see at your local grocer’s for the gems that are Starkrimson (in season August-January) or the diminutive Forelle (October – March) and Seckel (September – February), which are perfect for wreaths and centrepieces due to their small size. (The Starkrimson, as its name suggests, is of a most beautiful red!)
Oh, and don’t forget to eat them. Their healthy quotient of fibre beats out apples, and could come well in handy during the holiday pig-out. See some great seasonal pear recipes on the new FoodNetwork.ca.
