Video Question of the Week: Above Ground Pools – Yea or Nay?

The mere mention of above ground pools often causes a visceral reaction, so we though it would be most entertaining for you if we were to catch some of that on camera.  And so we did!  We took this week’s question to the streets of Toronto, (Yorkville and the new ROM, to be exact), and got some young, some older and some expert opinions on how this innocent shortcut to swimming became an emblem of the style-challenged…  What do you say?

Question of the Week appears every Monday on Style Sheet and on Food For Thought (FoodNetwork.ca)

Unfortunately, It's more about BUDGET  than bad taste. Believe it or not, the average family (magazine people - yes it's right, everybody doesn't consider 2000$ "low budget" decorating) cannot afford an inground pool.

We have an oval above ground pool in beautiful condition with a deck and landscaping around it.  Our kids are in it from right after breakfast and surface only for meals.  Their friends hang out at our house which is the way we prefer it.  It provides great exercise for all of us (me and two neighbours do an aquafit program in the pool 4 times a week).

We looked into a below ground pool - $50K, on average.

Above Ground Pools can go up to about 18K for the 'dug down' (halfway option) but if you look and are patient you can get a pool in very decent shape, with installation installed, for about $3K.

For my money, above ground was the smartest plan and it was the best decision we ever made thus far for our family.

Because of budget considerations, we've opted for a semi-above ground pool a few yearsback.  We have a step up to the pool from the deck because of safety considerations (did not want the kids to run and dive into the water).  We've never regretted our choice. With the deck and work involved for digging, it came to about $6-7K.  We got the use of a great pool which is well integrated into the landscape of the backyard for a fraction of the cost of an inground pool! We have added a solar heating system last year and we've been enjoying the pool even more!

Yea for budget, Nay for style....you can make them look better though by building a deck around the pool so it LOOKS kinda like an in ground.
