Not everyone with means rushes the hills of West Vancouver, Montreal’s West Mount or Toronto’s Victorian/Edwardian neighbourhoods. Some people prefer the less trodden, tranquil beauty of lakeside living in, say, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, where they can seriously spread their architectural wings. That’s what the owners of today’s featured Home Tour – a retiring couple – did when they commissioned East Coast architect Eugene Pieczonka of firm Lydon Lynch, to build them a home married to the lake. The lakeside property is set in a woodsy enclave of the Halifax Regional Municipality, which only recently underwent residential development.
Three stipulations guided Lydon Lynch’s design:
- Lake views form virtually every room
- Integration with the feel of the area’s suburban development
- The mitigation of noise from a nearby expressway
The resulting residence showcases undeniably discerning taste, of international reach: it’s chic! To greedily grab as much lake vista as possible, the house expands toward the water with basically a wall of windows. All living spaces – living room, kitchen, bedrooms – are unified under an upwardly sloping roof, orienting the dweller toward the view with every detail. All the support spaces such as storage and garage are relegated to the side yard and the part of the house facing the neighbourhood street – the side closest to the expressway – creating a barrier of sorts between the spill-over noise and the recreational/living space.
